Jillunder 12 taking ClarinexMay 12th, 2008Rating: 5.0000
My daughters pediatrician suggested a trial period of Clarinex. When I researched this med, I found out it had never been tested on children under 12, and she is 9 years old. Does anyone else have experience with giving this med to under 12's??

Thanks
Jill

My daughter is 10 and my pediatrician also gave my daughter Clarinex, which she has taken for 2 weeks with no releif of her symptoms, I haven't noticed any side effets other than she is cranky and her side now hurts when she coughs, but all allergy medicines seem to make her cranky. I am trying Claritin, she has taken Zyrtec which worked very well but is generally harder to get insurance companies to pay for. Ultimately, I am taking her to an allergist to determine if she in fact has allergies instead of a sinus condition. I am tired of playing with all these medicines that don't seem to work and with peditrcians who assume that because her nose isn't inflamed like a cold she had allergies. In doing research, I discoverd she may very well have a sinus contidition that should not be treated with allergy medication. My recommendation for anyone with allergy symptoms - find out what you really have and treat with the medicine most effective for you. Pediatricians should not be so quick to hand out Clarinex without finding out what the cause is.

My son is 8 and he started taking it about 2 weeks ago and I know that it has made him feel better but he is hungry all the time. Do you think it is the meds?
AnonymousClarinex for patients under 12December 3rd, 2005
My pediatrician gave us samples of Clarinex for my 5 year old last year, but he had trouble swallowing the pills so we gave up. Now the doctor has given us samples for my 8 year old. Why is the pediatrician giving Clarinex to such young children if it has not been approved for patients under 12 years old? Does it work better than Claritin? How do young children tolerate Clarinex?

If anyone has had experience with their kids taking this drug, please respond. Thanks.
