my 17 yr old son has been on abilify , for approx 3 weeks, he was on risperdal for about 2 yrs and gained alot of weight. he takes his pill in the morning and he seems to have no side effects, he has started to lose weight. he is adhd an has explosive anger syndrome, we have seen no change in behavior since coming off risperal. the abilify seems so far to be working well for him. he is a good student and you couldn't ask for a better behaved teenager. we have a doctors appt. saturday.the weight caused him to be self conscious, and he is already feeling better about himself.

I have also had great results with Abilify. My son is 10 years old and Autistic, and used to take Risperdal. He gained weight rapidly. He was irritable all the time. It seemed like he had to take more and more as time went on. We switched him to Abilify, and he is a new little boy. His behaviour has improved tremendously, and he lost about 25 pounds without trying. He still eats normally. This medicine has been a blessing to us. He is still Autistic, but his anxiety and agressive behaviour has tremendously improved. He is now trying to hold conversations with us. It's wonderfu!

Is your son on any other medications in conjunction with Abilify?

I find that Abilify after a long period of taking it can cause worse hallucinations plus vomiting and nausea. THe toxicity of the drug is seen after taking for one year or more. It has not stopped hallucinations but increased them.

Hi

i read your article on abilify and was very interested. My l6 yr old has adhd and oppositional defiant disorder. He is on adderall and has tried other medications. He has a very bad temper and verbally abusive. I tried depakote which was working but he was having hair loss. I was reading the effects people were have on abilify and it just scared me until I came across yours. I am going to consider it. I would like to hear from you on your progess.
Thank you

I wanted to ask you for some help because I saw your post about your son and Abilify. My son is six years old and we are still working on a diagnosis for him but right now he is ADHD, PDD. He went through some severe anxiety attacks not long ago. The same thing had happened almost two years ago and he was placed on Zoloft. He had been on Strattera for the ADHD but it wasn't effective. Recently he went through the same thing and the doctor put him on Risperdal. It did fine, or seems to have, controlling his anxiety but he has gained TWENTY pounds in TEN weeks! I am tapering him off the Risperdal because even if it helps his anxiety it is going to kill him at this rate due to the extreme weight gain.

Before trying Risperdal the doctor had put him on Abilify but he seemed so sleepy I wanted to change meds. What dosage is your son taking? I know there is an 11 year difference in age but I would like to try my son on a lower dose of Abilify to see if he would be more alert and I could get him completely off the Risperdal. My son has explosive times, usually in the afternoon, almost like clockwork. He isn't mean. He is very empathetic and loving. When he has explosive episodes it is more yelling and crying than anything else. He doesn't hit anyone but it is obvious that he can not control his outbursts and so I know it is a part of whatever his diagnosis is or will be.
I would be so grateful for a reply.
