| My son,6 yrs, was given abilify for possible bi-polar disorder. He was on it for about tree months but not a whole lot of change. So after Dr. approval I stopped giving him the very small dosage (2.5 mg)that night. I didn't taper it down. He became very angry, aggressive, and then after that he was a different boy. He was hyper, out-of-control, disrepectful, and rude. I can't tell you how upset I was to see him acting so different. Have you heard of this? I'm just hoping the abilify didn't do damage to him. |

| To Gina: Abilify has a very long 72 hour half life, and even at low dosages withdrawals can occur, especially in children who are much smaller. I suffer from protracted benzodiazempine withdrawal syndrome and I was only taking 0.5mg of Klonopin a day. The dosage may have been small, but I was on it for 8 months...that's 7 months longer than the safe reccomended time of 3-4 weeks at most. I wasn't supposed to take it even for a few weeks. I suffered from a panic attack the last time I was hospitalized. They gave me 4 months worth of this stuff when I was discharged and I wasn't able to quit because the withdrawal symptoms were so bad (which included insomnia, audio hallucinations, paranoia) Thank God I'm off it now, but I still suffer from them. Be careful next time. It's always better to contact a phone nurse or pharmacist before quitting any meds to know the safest way of doing it. |
