BethWhy not long term?May 12th, 2008Rating: Not Rated
Hi,

My Mother takes Aciphex, long term though, would someone mind E-mailing me why this should only be taken short-term? She has been on it for about 7 months now and I am alittle worried after reading it is only for short-term usage.

I was also considering it, I also have a wonderful (yeah right) insurance company that makes me go through "expereiments" also before getting the drug that my doctor prescribes, they refused Nexium and put me on over the counter Prilo. why? Because it is cheaper! Ahh!

Thanks for any help!

Beth:)

I just had an upper endoscopy for my GERD and had some benign fundal polyps removed. This is a side effect of taking beta blockers, such as Aciphex, for a long period of time. The polyps are harmless and are not the type that can turn to cancer.

This side effect is well worth it to me, as taking Aciphex long term (I've been taking it for 6 years) keeps me from having stabbing and burning chest pain, inflammation, ulcers, Barrett's Esophagus and cancer. My father died from esophogeal cancer in 2002 because he did not take steps to manage his GERD until it was too late.

My doctor was able to prescribe Aciphex right away by writing a letter to my insurance company, explaining why this was a better medical fit for me than something like Prilosec or Nexium. Good luck to you.

After 2 or 3 years of using Pepcid via prescription, my doc switched me to Aciphex as the Pepcid was no longer very effective. Have been taking the Aciphex now maybe 6 years or so on a daily basis and it works really well. To get this much relief day and nite from heartburn is like a miracle.

I do have some headache and IBS issues, but we can not determine if these are caused by Aciphex. 2 yrs ago I quit taking Aciphex on my own, as an experiment, just to see if the constant dull headache would go away in a week or so. The heartburn was so bad after 2 or 3 days, that I cancelled my experiment and began taking the Aciphex again....I couldn't stand being forced to get up at 2 AM and 3 AM by the bad heartburn, and then trying to get up at 6 AM to come in to work. I was worn out. The Aciphex fixed that.

I may never know if it contributes to the headache and IBS, but oh, well there are probably many things we will never know. Hope this helps.
