I took Actonel for 3 months with no effects initially but after 8 weeks I started to have difficulty swallowing and after 11 weeks pain in the duodenum/ stomach. I have been off the medication for 4 weeks but still have difficulty swallowing. Has anyone else experienced this side-effect?

I got acid reflux from actonel (2 years of it). you need to see a doctor or at least read up on reflux.

I am a 77 year old male who has been on Actonel for years. About 2 years ago I started getting hiccups when eating, this was followed by inability to swallow, and painful attempts to regurgitate. Waiting for up to 20 minutes solved the problem, I could then swallow. Situation has been getting worse. It was diagnosed as acid reflux, but I never got heartburn. I realized my doctor was on the wrong track, so I looked up Esophageal blockage on the internet, and found a good description of my problem, it is called Achalasia. Tell your doctor that may be what you have. It is much rarer than acid reflux, so you may have to educate your own doctor. I no longer use Actonel, I now use Miacalcin, a puffer system. I have been using it for 6 months with no ill effects.
Look up www.ddc.musc.edu/ddc_pub/digestiveProbs/diseases/esophagus/achalasia.htm
