| It's hard to believe that he could be really taking the medicine and eating all the time. It causes severe nausea and sometimes vomiting in the first 2 weeks in most adults. It's a stimulant so it should slow a child down. The pills are way too small and I even have trouble deciding if I really took it because they are so small. | ||

| My daughter, Elizabeth is 10 and has been taking Abilify for 7 months and has just recently been increased to 40 mg a day. After about 1 month it started activating her and she is now on 20 mg a day but is having panic attacks which she has never had before. Is anyone elses child on such a high dose and or experiencing panic attacks? | ||

| my son is seven years old and we just started taking this tonight-he's taking 5mg- i was so happy to see another young child was taking it- may i ask what is wrong with your grandson? My son is bi-polar- the doctor is hoping this will help stop the violent rages and help him get a full nights sleep-- | ||

| Our son has been on abilify for about seven months - he is quite in control of his temper - and has stopped hallucinating. He is also very hungry all the time, and requires trazadone to get to sleep at night. He is also on paxil, risperdal. He has tried so many medications since 4 yrs old - so far this has real potential | ||

| Wow, why is your son on Risperdal and Abilify? That is like doubling up on medication, I would talk to his doctor and ask why. I was on Risperdal before I was on Abilify. I could never stay awake, I would sleep for 20 hours at a time, seriously, talk to his doctor, it may not be very good for him. | ||

| He is so young!! Why so many meds? You may need to consult a pediatrician other than the one he is seeing as well as a new PSY. | ||

| My child has been on Abilify for several months. Her behavior is much more manageable. She also thinks more clearly and is more cooperative. I have a question-She has had uncontrolled vomiting with Abilify for several weeks. Has anyone had this too and what did they do for this? | ||

| My 7 yr old son has been taking 10 mg abilify for the past year and is doing great with the only side effect being that he is hyper sensitive- which translates into him crying all the time. He is also taking 54 mg concerta since he is diagnosed with ADHD, ODD, IED, and Bi-polar. For the first time in ages, my son can focus enough to get his work done and we don't have the raging arguments over everything any longer. | ||

| My son is almost 6 and was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (high funtioning autism). He has been on Abilify for 2 months, the first month was great he went to bed at 8pm which he never did before. He was also having fits of Oppositional Defiant Disorder which improved over the first month. Now however his fits of rage and his lack of ability to follow any type of instruction (brushing teeth, taking a shower) he doesn't want to do any of them and when forced he completely rages. Thinking about changing his medication, he's 47 pounds of pure energy when he's raging. | ||

| My son (7 yrs old) is also on Abilify. He was just switched to Abilify 2 months ago from Carbatrol for Bipolar. We had tried Risperdal, Seroquel, Depakote and Carbatrol and nothing has worked. Abilify has been a God send! He was so thin because of taking Adderall and with Abilify, he is eating. He wakes up in the morning and he is calm--not screaming at us for the first 30 minutes. We did have problems when I gave him the Abilify at night. He would have horrible nightmares. Now, I give it to him in the morning and things are great! We have been searching for the right medication for 3 years and we have finally found it. His school see's a big difference too. | ||

| I work in the mental health field Believe me No medication is for everyone You can experience para phyotic reactions to any medication when this results the oposite of what the medication is prescribed for occures My advice to anyone when this happens Get them off the medication as soon as possible consult your doctor only you know your child or family member so stick your grounds when you feel something is not right Terri | ||

| My 3 1/2 yr old son just starting taking Abilify. After a month of trying Adderall XR, with NO relief, this seems to be working, He's thought to have ADHD, ODD AND OCD. I'm hoping this will slow him down enough to be able to talk properly. He'll start speech therapy in the fall, along with preschool. Our Ped. already informed me that we'll have to go thru trial periods with different meds, until we find the right one, that works best. I didn't like to read about some of your side effects, however, since he can't tell me too much about what's happening with him, I may never know. But of course, I'll be watching him extra close. Thanks for the posts. I wish you all well. | ||

| I have a 10 y/o grandaughter who has currently been on abilify for the past 6 weeks. this medication is a blessing. she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. she also has oppositional behavior disorder. without medication she has angry outbursts that lead to restrainment so she does not hurt herself or others. She can be depressed at times and have episodes of sobbing. She is extreemly paranoid of what others are saying about her.We haev been on a medication journey for the past year. Some of the meds she was taking was respirodal, topomax, geodon. Either there were serious side effects ot medication did not work at all. She has been taking abilify for the past 6 weeks. Her condition was improved within the 1st 2 weeks. Ther are no angry outbursts that require intervention, she is more compliant with requests, her depressive moods have minimized and finally there are no side effects ! We have state funded medical and were denied twice for use of this drug our doctor cared enough to intervene. The main reason was given because this drug has not been proven to treat bipolar disorder. Well ..she proved them wrong. | ||

| Our nine-year old son has been on Abilify for 9 months. He has also been on various forms of Ritalin for the past 5 years, which have worked quite well in terms of focus and compliance; however, he always had issues with mood, frustration and temper with Ritalin alone. Abilify has been wonderful in terms of evening out the mood swings and reducing irritability. The only problem has been significant weight gain, which from what our psychiatrist has said and what I've read on the internet is not the norm. From what our doctor has told me and some of the comments I've read here, I'm wondering if the weight gain is more common in children. We are going to try adding Topamax to counteract the increased appetite he's had with Abilify, because apart from that, it's really been a great medication for our son. Like any drug, it works well for some and not as well for others. Good luck to all of you out there who are struggling with finding the right solution for you or a loved one. God Bless! | ||

| My son is 8 years old and has been on Abilify for about a month now, 1/2 of a 5 mg tablet. 5 mg was actually too much for him; sleeping all the time. I have noticed a great improvement in his behavior. I have noticed, since I read this, that he is always hungry. His appetite has always been good, but now it's almost as if he can't get full. | ||

| My daughter is 9 years old and recently started taking 5 mg. of Abilify. She immediately started having tremors. We cut the dose to 2.5 mg. and her symptoms got worse. Now she is having difficulty controlling the movement of her tongue and lips as well as severe tremors. We stopped the medication 2 days ago and gave her Benadryl for 24hours. However, the tremors and tongue movements are still significant. Has anyone else had this experience? We have been told that several children have been seen in the local emergency room with the same effects. Will the tremors and uncontrollable movements stop? Thanks for any information about this drug. | ||

| I am amazed that children so young are taking such potent drugs. My son aged 36 has been on Abilify (10mg first 2 weeks, 20mg since)for 4 weeks and I am very worried. He was weaned off Zeprexa to go on Abilify but he has deteriorated. He is now very anxious, confused, having sweats (face goes extremely red and temperature goes up)so we are seeing the doctor tomorrow. He is also on Seroxat and diazepam when required. He had a very rare reaction to the new age drug clozaril and nearly died, so you can understand why I am so worried. Has anyone else had the side effect of very red face and raised temperature? | ||

| Reading about all these very young children taking such toxic drugs scares me silly. My son aged 36 was diagnosed with a serious mental illness 17 years ago and has been on quite a number of different medications since then. I have to say that Abilify is one of the worse! Within a week of being solely on this drug he developed high anxiety levels, could hardly keep awake during the day and couldn't sleep at night because of anxiety. He was extremely confused, so much so I didn't want him to be on his own because he didn't seem to know what he was doing. (I also took all medication out of his room as a precaution. He had a fever on the 10th day. He also suffered from vomitting and nausea. My son is 6'1" and 14st and was taking 20mg a day. How on earth can young children tolerate 40mg a day!! Have any of you researched how long this drug has been tested. NOT VERY LONG and NEVER ON CHILDREN. There was a problem with eye toxicity on rats which damaged the retina and they do not know how this will affect humans! Too scarey for me. Please, please investigate further and think carefully if you want your kids on such a dangerous drug. I stopped the medication and he is now back on Olanzapine and within two days the anxiety levels dropped as did the confusion etc. It was the drug not the illness that was causing these symptoms! Our kids are the most precious things in our lives. I am so worried that maybe some of you are unaware of the damage this drug can do. Having been a worried mum for 19 years my heart goes out to all of you, as you try to do the very best for your kids. | ||

| My 11 year old daughter will be starting with Abilfy to-morrow. She is on Prozac for OCD which has not worked after 7 weeks and was on Zyprexa for the past 4 weeks for Pyscosis, which did not help other than make her want to continuously eat and put on alot of weight. I have been concerned about Abilify as it has not had extensive testing on children! She will be weaned off Prozac & onto Zoloft ........ | ||

| My son is 23 years old and has been on Abilify for only two weeks. His dosage was 7/12 mgs...but then was told to double it to 15 mgs. Our experience is that he went into a rage about 3 to 4 hours after he took his 15 mgs and started being OCD. This is the worst that I have seen him...so I dropped him back to the half dosage until I can see his doctor again. Not feeling real good about this Abilify. He was diagnosed with bipolar. | ||

| My son has been taking abilify for approx. 6-8months. He is 8 years old and only takes .5mil per day. I have seen much improvement in his behavior with less outbursts. He still has trouble concentrating on school work, however he had this problem before the medication. I would be concerned that your child is taking too much medication. | ||

| I have a 13 year old who has been on abilify for two years he takes 20mg a day. He can eat even when he is not hungry and of late is not sleeping well at all, and has a horrible body odor almost like throw up. I have consulted with his DR in regards to other side effects that we experienced like heart palpatations was told this is normal, extreme overheating and sweating during exercise. All to be construed as normal, I am looking for an alternative at this point any suggestions please email me at rscriley1@comcast.net. He has Tourettes Syndrome, ODD, ADD, OCD. Thank You | ||

| sandie | anyone in uk with child on meds? | September 12th, 2007 |
| hi my 11 year old became very ill age 7, he became withdrawn , stopped talking became very clingy and started refusing to go through the school gates because he thought hed heard teachers planning to kill him. it escalated from there and he got worse and worse screaming day and night , hed often fall asleep at roughly 4 am then wake at 6 am, hed wet the bed everynight too. he became completely non functional , could not go to school , made no attempts at friendships , would rock head bang, and made suicide attempts driven by voices, he was very very ill for 6 months untill he was refered to londons great ormand street hospital. the specialists first words were omg how long has this child been like this , he said this child needs anti-sycotic meds emmedietly. he was started on a low dose of respiredone , 0.5 mg increased by 0.5mg every month untill 3 mg was reached. after one month bed wetting stopped after two months screaming stopped then he got better and better untill he was able to return to school. due to massive weight gain docs decided to dcrease respiredone gradualy and add haldol, but as soon as respiredone stopped his symptoms returned with a vengeance and he ended up in hospital, respiredone was re added and once again after several months out of school , he stabilized, but unfortunately the school were too scared to take him back and special school was recommended. hes now at special schooling and its best place for him. in october docs again tried to take off respiredone and add abilify , but again once respiredone stopped he relapsed and spent 3 months in london hospital. hes now stable on 1.5 mg respiredone , 7.5 abilify 1000epilim and 20 mg prozac. unfortunately my son needs these meds to live outside of hospital. my son is diaged bipolar with sycosis, GAD ,autism, odd, seperation anxiety . to those who say omg take your child off all those meds etc , well please read up on childhood sz childhood bipolar childhood sza, go sit in a syc unit with these kids, they are experiencing an adults illness and children have a worse form and a worse prognosis than the adults , these children would be locked up or dead without these meds, would you take your adult sz son/daughter off their meds? im so greatfull to have my son out of hospital and stable its amazing to see him function. anyway ive not met or spoke with anyone in uk with kids on meds . are there any here? love from sandie and i wish all your children well and all you parents to. | ||

| You are soooo right my 6 yr. old nephew was put abilify 3 months ago and he too has destoyed his classroom, thrown chairs and bit a security guard in school. Since Sept.he has been thrown out of 2 schools and been suspended. When he first started the meds he was lathergic, couldn't keep his eyes open or really interact. He vomits and also gets terrible headaches. He is in fostercare and his court appointed phychartist put him on it,without an evaluation,no test nothing. What the heck is going on!His mother has been diagnosed as sicotic-sorry i don't know how to spell it with violent impulses- she beat her roomate so bad when her son was there, she ended up in the hospital for 2 weeks, and his grandmother was drug addict from her teens until she died at age 47. She lost her daughter because she tried to drown her at age 2. His brother is very violent and unsympathetic,he is only 7yrs.old.I am afraid to leave my nephew and my children 6 and even my 11yr. old alone with his brother. His brother has thrown chairs at his teachers ,mutilated his self, and his latest beat a boy on the schol bus with a seatbelt buckle. He is not the biggest kid -he only weighs 50lbs. and is tall and very thin, but still his classmates are very frightened of him.He has shown his penis twice ,on 2 separate occasions to his classmates. My sister runs a home for mentally disturbed people and she was able to see his brother was disturbed after only a short time.My mother-in-law is my nephews fostermother and she is very abusive.Sheis a sociopath and not quite right. She'll say anything just to hurt or cause trouble and doesn't hide her twisted views. Myself, her children, grandchildren and both my nephews are half latino. And yet she has all kinds of racial slurs to spew at her fosterchild.Jon has been abused and neglected by his mother, grandmother their friends and my mother-in-law,he has been through alot inhis 6 yrs.,i pray everyday he wil be out of fostercare 1 day.I cannot take him in because he is my husbands relation by blood, not mine and my husband doesn't want to take the responsibility. That drug is awful, dangerous and I think it is altering or maybe damaging my nephews brain. And it hasn't been approved for use in children. They are using these children as guinea pigs and its just not right. The goverment should better regulate the applications these drugs are being used for and who their being used on. | ||

| My nephew on my husbands side is 6yrs old and has been on Abilify for3 months,he has had some side effects like headaches, vomiting and he can't sleep sometimes and sometimes he's always tired. He is in fostercare in N.Y. and it seems the state has the only say in his medicalcare.I was very involved in his upbringing (while in fostercare). His mom and grandmother were drug addicted and ran a crackhouse when he was discovered during a raid by the police.Since he was living with me,from age 1 to5.Everything was fine, jon was well adjusted, doing well in nursery school and just blossuming. We rarely saw his mother, maybe 4or 5 times a year(thats all she ever showed-it was supposed to be twice a week) supervised for 2 hours.Than she got weekend visits, last year she came just about every weekend. When he was with her he went to the store ALONE, was beaten, came home with bruises and was bathed by many of her friends, oh yeahwe later found out he was spending his weekends mostly babysat by a drug addicted,HIV positive mother of 6 and her drugdealing boyfriend. his clothes coat and shoes were repeatedly stolen or least thats what his mother said. This year she never sees him. He has become violent and depressed. he has been thrown out of 2 schools and been suspended just since september.I pray soon he will be free from this hell they call fostercare. He has been diagnosed as ADHD and put on meds. He doesn't need it,all he needs is his mother to lose all rights, not to mention he currently lives with his racist, sociopath fostermother. She is very abusive and because his mother slept with her ex-husband will do anything to get back at her. i know this is crazy, i couldn't believe it.Social workers are lazy,Phychartrist want to use drugs to treat everything. In this particular case with all do respect, is not necesary. This drug is not approved for children, use with caution.Phychiatric drugs are addictive and affect the development of the brain. He is lethargicis removed from us and actually is more aggressive and violent. He used to be such a sweet, friendly and docile child.I wish I knew what was going on I think what Jon needs is a real phychartrist and real therapy not just playing board games and the constant questions about his mother. Ihave made numerous complaints to the state to no avail. His sadist fostermother Verbaly threatens him with death,no on will stop her from killing his mother, thats what he tells me when he gets up the courage. But he wont tell the social workers.Of course she is right there when he is being questions and calls him a liar and he recants.I am sorry i didn't see it sooner.Like the 2 times the police bought her home with jon because people called the police when she was hitting him in the street ,he was 2 the first time and 4 the second time. The foster agency doesn't care ,The social worker,Trina Johnson of The salvation Army,in n.y.c came over jon told her in front of me, his fostermother and my husband that she beats him,his fostermother said to take him now and she said now wait a minute thats not how it works and left.We later earned she started her vacation the next day. It has been downhill from then.So good luck all,but please make sure the diagnosis is correct and that ths meds are really needed. | ||

| Anonymous | taking son off after 2 years | November 21st, 2007 |
| Hello, my 7 year old son has been on Abilify for about 2 years. he takes 2.5 mg in the evening, usually around 5:30 pm. He was diagnosed with ADHD, bi-polar, and ptsd. my first husband passed away 3 years ago, we moved and had 2 other deaths in the family, and then I re-married. So many life changes for a young boy. He has pretty much outgrown most of the behavior that got him into trouble in school: outbursts in class, not keeping his hands to himself, destructing property (tearing up his kindergarten nap time mat), etc..arguing, jumping on his bed, etc.. I am just not sure of the long term effects of Focalin or Abilify..I am worried and have taken him off of the Focalin, and now 2 nights off of the abilify.. Just came home from the hospital because he has an Ulcer and Acid reflux!! he does not eat too much junk food, my intuition tells me it was one of the med,,,Forget it!! We are back to scratch. I am not telling the school he is off of his meds, the schools receive extra money when they have students on behavior meds. We are taking it day to day and lots of patience and goal setting. I know he can do it. I believe these meds are not the best. Not worth the long term effects. | ||
