| I have experienced some weight gain since starting taking Singulair. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I can not find weight gain listed anywhere in the side effects but have been told by other users that they, too, have experienced this problem. Is there another medication I can take other than Singulair that works as well but does not have this problem side effect???? Thank you | |||

| My 17 year old daughter started taking singular and has gained 15 pounds in 5 weeks. I have been looking things up to see if the drugs had weight gain as a side effect. I was glad to read your coment. I will keep looking for any information I can find. | ||

| I have also gained weight since I started taking Singulair - about 20 lbs. in 5 months. This is the only medication I take. I used to be able to eat anytime of the night. Since this has started, I make sure I do not eat past 9 pm. I complained to my dr. about the weight gain. He told me that is not a side effect of Singulair. I said it may be one they will not admit to yet and that I had found others online who also complained of weight gain after they started taking Singulair. I keep searching for information on this also. But I don't think they will readily admit to the weight gain. After all, who wants to take medication that they know is going to cause them to gain weight? | ||

| I have been on singulair for 2-1/2 months and I have lost about 8 pounds. Because I feel better I seem to eat more. I am not trying to lose weight. I sleep better and I have more energy during the day. The effects of my allergies are greatly reduced and my chest is not heavy as it previously was. I do get occasional vague background headaches which I never had previously but they do go away fast. I have had some stomach discomfort usually in the night, it is very occasional, about 5 times in the 2-1/2 months. I am 65 years old, and I take apo-hydro as well for high blood pressure. Maybe because of the weight loss my blood pressure is now about 128/72. Don't know if this is an effect of the Singulair or not, I have never had blood pressure that is so low in 18 years. | ||

| I am also taking Singulair, for about 11 months now, and have experienced weight gain. I stopped counting after the first 20 lbs, about 6 months ago... probably up to 30+ by now. I'm in my mid 30's and moderately active. I have not been eating any more than usual since I started the drug. In fact I've been cutting back, but to my dismay, the pounds keep creeping up. I also have been wondering if it could be a side effect of Singulair, as it is the only medication I am taking. I just began my research of the side effects, and also can not find weight gain listed as one. I was glad to see your comments and know that I am not the only one experiencing this. | ||

| I started taking Singulair less than a week ago, since I've had allergic reactions to 2 different kinds of inhallers. I'm up 2 pounds (and I've been dieting!). I can't find "weight gain" listed as a side effect anywhere, so I'm glad to know it's not just me! | ||

| I too have had unexplained weight gain since taking Singulair. Of course, just like the other replies, my doctor doesnt associate the weight gain and stomach pain to Singular. As of today, I am getting off of this drug. | ||

| My son takes Accolate and that works wonderfully for him. He has not had any side effects relating to his weight (or any other bothersome effects for that matter)...just a suggestion =) Hope this helps. | ||

| I have also been on Singulair for about 15 months. Since then, I have gained 20 lbs. I have always been slim and never had any real weight problems until now. I was looking for possible side-effects and found this site. I recently turned 50, so it could be that my metabolism is starting to slow down. But 20 lbs. seems a little dramatic. | ||

| Add my name to the list of those that have gained weight while taking Singulair. In the past year, I have gained 20 lbs and have not changed my eating or exercise habits. Right now I have a sinus infection and chronic brochinitis for the second time since September. I am not sure Singulair is my answer even if I have seen some benefits from taking it. | ||

| Hi, I was looking online to see if weight gain is a side effect of singulair too. I started taking it for migraine headaches and it sure has reduced the headaches but every week I gain more weight. Im not happy because I lost 60 pounds over the past year and felt soo much better. I also cant find the weight gain as a side effect but apparently it is! Which is worse? Being fat or having a headache? Maybe its the sodium? | ||

| My now 4 year son suffers from acute asthma, allergies, and ezcema. He was first diagnosis when he was 6 months old and was given abuturol and flovent (inhaler). When he was 2 1/2 yrs old, his doctor prescribed Singulair daily. In the 2 yrs since he started Singulair, a couple of things have occured. First, he has nearly doubled his weight, going from 37 pounds to 60 pounds in 18 months. He has had increasing bad emotional temper tantrums, which did not have before. But has had only 2 asthma attacks, both of which were mild compared to the commonplace hospitals visits of the past. I am certain the Singulair is 100% responsible for both good outcomes as well as the bad. I just thought I would share. | ||

| I have been on Singulair for 3 years since my bout of combination asthmatic bronchitis and walking pneumonia in the month of June - July 2001 and it improved my ability to 'keep up' with the pace of everyday life without asthma related issues. However, within the past 6 months I have noticed a sudden remarkable downside. I have begun almost suddenly retaining water to the point that my rings would not turn on my finger and they leave indentions, as do my clothes, shoes, flip flops even do it. My face is puffy and I feel more tired than usual now. I have gained steadily without changing my diet or exercise program from what it used to be. Now I am being treated aggressively for water retention and weaning off the Singulair to see if that helps in any way. I will have to rely on my inhaler more now if I become symptomatic because my doctor wants to see if my symptoms improve without the medication. I am also quitting the amyltripteline and only taking the ultracet when absolutely necessary. I may also be diuretic resistant if this doesn't work. I have been on a sodium free diet my entire life due to heart defects/disease so that is not an issue for me. I will keep trying anything to not feel as though my size 4's are 14's if you know what I mean. | ||

| I have been on Singulair for a little less than a month. I run an average of 30 miles a week; have changed nothing about my diet; and have gained over 8 pounds. The only drug I am currently taking is Singular, but not for long. | ||

| I have been searching the web as my 9 year old daughter was put on Singulair the spring of 2004 and has gained 15 pounds. I have asked the Dr. several times if the drup Singulair could be part of the problem but he keeps assuring me that it is not the drug causing the problem. My child is very active (is not a couch potato) and has been watching what she eats and she still continues to gain. If anyone has found an alternative drug that works just as well...without the weight gain, please let us know! Thank you! | ||

| I have been taking Singulair for over a year and have gained about 20 lbs. Again, no one will admit weight gain is a side effect. Please let me know if you find another drug for asthma that does not cause swelling and weight gain. My asthma is mild, and mainly consists of a constant cough, so I have been taking a half tablet broken (10mg in half). They won't give me twice as many of the 5mg, so I get my regular 10 mg. and break it in half. If I feel I need the other half, I take it at the end of the day. I don't seem as bloated. | ||

| This is a reply to the weight gain side effect report that was posted. I have been taking singulair, and it has been wonderful and has controlled my asthma considerably. The side effect is the weight that I have gained. Having lived a very slim life, I love the new curves but I need a new wardrobe now !!! | ||

| I was soooo excited to find this. I have gained 20 lbs in the last 4-5 months since I have been taking singulair. I even got a personal trainer and I tried the south beach diet for 2 months and still gained weight! I had no idea what it was from. My gynecologist said it could just be harmones and when I asked her about my allergy medications (allegra, nasacort, and singulair) she said that singulair may have caused some because it contains part of a steroid, but she brushed it off. Now I really think that singulair is what has caused this weight gain. I quit taking it 3 days ago so we will see what happens. I am just scared my bad allergy headaches are going to return and I don't know to stop taking the allegra and nasacort as well. | ||

| I have been on Singuilar and Advair since mid-October and have gained close to 20 pounds. The most I have weighed since being 8 months pregnant. I was blaming the Advair and was going to stop it since Singulair did not mentain weight gain. But I guess I might rethink my opinion of Singulair. I am glad I found this. | ||

| I have just started taking singulair. In the one month that I have been taking this I have gained 6 lbs. In the summer I went on a weight loss program and by the end of Aug I lost 26lbs and maintend my weight (even through xmas). I was reasearching this drug and found your comments. Singulair is the ONLY medication I am on and BOOM six pounds. I also find i crave sweets alot. The only othet time I was like this was when I was on medication for depression, which dr.s will swear that it doesn't make you gain weight either. | ||

| I to have experienced weight gain on Singulair. I have gained about 25lbs in the past year which is an extreme for me considering I have never been able to gain weight. I was starting to think something was wrong with me and cut back food and joined a gym. I am stopping this med asap since I am convinced now that this is the root of all evil! Why can't the drug companies admit to this and warn us before we get hooked on it and started blowing up? I am going to talk to the allergist at once! Thanks for all the other feedback! | ||

| I have been taking singular for about a month and a 1/2 now. I new something was wrong when my clothes started to fit tighter, and I couldn't button a pair of my favorite pants. I've gained almost ten pounds. I wondered if it I had been eating that much and hadn't noticed but my roommate agreed that I had been nothing out of the ordinary. I called my Doctors office to find out if it was a steroid. A nurse told me it was not but does have a steroid in it. I was glad to see that I was not the only one having this problem. | ||

| I too have experienced weight gain over the last year and 1/2 while taking singular. I've gained about 12lbs. No matter what I do, exercise, diet, etc., I do not lose weight. It just keeps creeping on. I have been wondering about singular and now that I read the comments, I think singular might be the problem. I hate to go off of it, because it has helped a lot, but I am going to gradually take myself off and see what happens. | ||

| My 13 year old daughter has gained so much weight so fast she even has stretch marks from the rapid weight gain over the last year. The doctor recently upped her does of singulair form 5mg to 10 mg. After reading this post I'm in a panic this will cause even a greater weight gain. I think I will take her off of Singulair. Maybe she can rely on her inhaler. Has anyone been able to lose the weight after stopping the medication? | ||

| I have been taking Singulair for 5 months now. The good news is that my intense sinus headaches, severe coughing and allergy-induced asthma have disappeared. The bad news is the extra 20+ lbs in the midsection since I started. After being asked "how far I was along" by a coworker, I got a personal trainer and eat even better than I used to (which was very good). Yet after 2 months, I have still gained and not dropped. I tried to stop Singulair but my headaches and stuffiness returned within 24 hours. | ||

| Ok, so now I am going off singulair... I have been on it for 4 years, and have gained 40+ pounds. I've exercised, dieted, etc. Never associated it with singulair because my doctor hasn't... so as of today ... I'm off. Thanks | ||

| My son has been taking Singulair since he was 4 years old. Before Singulair, he was a normal sized little boy. Since taking the Singulair (for over 4 years now) he has gained weight at an unbelievable rate. He is active, does not get snacks and eats healthy portions of good foods. Even with all his bike riding, running and playing, swimming and a special exercise class at the gym, he continues to gain weight. He is 4'6" tall and weighs 98 pounds. He also has bad headaches, horrible gas and walks in his sleep. His pediatrician will not listen when I broach the subject of Singulair in relationship to his weight gain. We started weaning him off of it a few weeks back...and as of tonight he is not taking it. I hope that his weight returns to normal now and his other problems disappear...I'd love to hear from some of you about how long it took for your weight to return to normal (if it did) and for your other side effects to go away. | ||

| Like so many others before me, I was delighted to stumble on this site and Kathy C's question. My allergies were causing increasing health issues-beginning with sinus infections to "seasonal" asthma and finally into full-blown asthma. In April 2007, my doctor prescribed singular which almost immediately addressed all the problem. Now, 7 months later, I've gained 10 pounds--all in my mid-section. Because weight gain has been an issue for me almost all of my adult life, I simply must make a decision between breathing freely because the Singular has controlled my asthma or breathing freely because I'm giving up the Singluar in order not to be choked with excess weight. I think I'm going to choose giving up the Singular. | ||

| My nine year old grandson has been on Singulair since he was 5 years old. I was never administered to him on a regular basis until recently and he has experienced weight gain even though his physical activity has increased. He seems to be very hungry in the morning even though he has a large bowl of cereal before going to bed each night. I have read that many people have experienced weight gain. I am wondering if they also feel very hungry first thing in the morning. | ||
