My 17 year old son was just started on Abilify. I was quite concerned when I saw that it is a drug for schizophrenia because he does not have that diagnosis, and I see that there are no formal tests for use in children. I would be interested in hearing about other people's experiences with their children.
Thanks |

We just started with my son, who is 12 and has Aspergers. He seems very tired and says it makes him feel weird. So far there's been very little difference in his perseverating or angry outbursts.

One of my students who is diagnosed with PDD has just started Abilify and I am interested the stories of any other children with this diagnosis that have experience on this medication. I am concerned that this is a med for schizophrenia and may be too much for her little body, not to mention overkill.

I'd just like to say that I'm 17 and recently started on Abilify as well.. I don't have schizophrenia, but my psych put me on it for severe depression. She uses it in children, teens, and adults. I don't think you should be concerned =)

I have found that my six year old daughter who has autism builds up a tolerance for both risperdol and abilify after about 5-6 months. We have been alternating between the two for a while, but I really like the effects of the abilify much better when it is working well for her. Her communication is noticeably improved and her frustration level appears much less. I would, however, like to know what would be the maximum safe dosage for my daughter. She is 48 inches and weighs 56 lbs.(she has gained 20 pounds over the past 10-12 months!!) I am also concerned about weight gain and premature breast development.

It is also used to treat bipolar and other conditions so do not be alarmed.

You should know that Abilify is not approved for children. My Daughter has been taken Serequel and she put on 175 pounds. I then took her off years later and finally she started to loose the weight. The Dr wanted to put her on Abilify. I said I have had to research it. Sure enough, it is not approved for children and has FATAL side effects.

My son (11 PDD or High Functioning Autism depending on the doctor) just started taking Abilify a week ago. (5mg) He is MUCH more cooperative and actually sleeps 8 hours a night, instead of his usual 4 hours. It makes him very tired during the day. He is also taking Adderol, Clonodine and Depakote, so maybe this drug cocktail is what's making him tired. He hasn't tantrumed since the first day after he started taking Abilify. I can talk him down from his anxiety episodes. I wonder if it will help him with his perseverations. I would like to hear from other parents that have kids on this medication. It's always scary starting a new med with him. The last time, (Celexa he ended up assaulting a girl at school and the principle, tried to jump out of a moving car, ran away to a gas station and told the cashier he was going to steal things so he could go to jail. The police came; he wouldn't tell him his name, so they cuffed him and took him to detention. Nightmare!!! But so far, so good on this med.

My son has just begun to take Abilify this past week and has autism. His moods have improved in the last day and he is sleeping well at night.was recently on Risperdal for the past year1/2 and was taken off of it because he gained a lot of weight and dr. didn't want him at risk for heart disease or diabetes, but I read the drug pamphlet on abilify said this may increase your chances of getting diabetes? That has me a little worried. The Risperdol was great for a long time, but instead of increasing the dose the dr. decided to try this drug plus 1/2 teaspoon of Neurotin- so far things seem to be getting better. I hope this helps him without putting him at risk, he's 11 yrs old.

My son was diagnosed as "bi polar" at the age of 5. However, we recently have been given "aspergers" as the real diagnosis, since the symptoms are so similar. He was initally given high doses of Zyprexa, 30 mg, and he developed tartive diskenetia. We went through every drug possible before trying Abilify. He has been taking it for about a year. Although we are scared to death of long term affects, his behavior is now at least somewhat manageable. Previously his tantrums were to the point that we had to put a lock on his sister's door to protect her from his rage. Now we see the rage a few times a month, and we can focus on other things. His cocktail includes adderol, abilify, and strattera. We have a great dr in the dallas / ft worth area that seems to really know his stuff on the meds. So far so good for us.

I find Abilify to be by far the most amazing drug I have ever tried, but I'll have to see how it behaves over time, since I've only been taking it for a week. I haven't had any side effects besides feeling nauseous the first day. That's it!! I guess you could say that another side effect is that I don't have as much appetite, oh what a tragedy. :P BUT... and this may make a big difference... I'm taking it for OCD, not bipolar disorder. Also, I take Focalin, which goes with it so wonderfully well, and fluvoxamine, since Abilify is an augmentation drug when it's used for OCD. So far, though, it's on my Favorite Drugs List. :)
