I started using ortho evra about eight months ago, and started getting vaginal yeast infections (1 every month). I stopped using the patch and went back to the pill about 3 months ago and have not had another yeast infection since. 8/22/03

I was on the patch, for not even 1 week and it began to make me feel nauseated and caused vaginal bleeding. After only the first week of usage, I began to feel bloated and abdominal pain as well. Needless to say, I stopped taking it, but I am still experiencing some vaginal bleeding. I would not encourage anyone to use the "patch."

Anonymous change in schedule May 12th, 2008 Rating: 3.3333
My cycle was every wednesday. My patch was loose so I replaced it with another patch on Monday before the Third patch had to be put on. I followed my same schedule, but I got my period on the Wednesday (off week)instead of a Friday or Saturday when I was have it. I have been on the patch since March of this year. I wanted to know if anyone else had this problem with their period not coming for that month and they continued to use the patch or did they stop the patch until their period came and started a new cycle.

The patch has worked wonders for me. I used to be on Alesse and had terrible mood swings. I have just finished my first month on the patch, and everything is great. The only thing is my menstrual cramps have increased, but its better then being moody. When starting a new birth control, keep in mind to give 6 months to a year to regulate. Have a good one!

Ijust started using the patch due to me either throwing up the pills or forgetting to take it. I just applied the second patch and I started having really bad cramps and diarrhea. My breast are really tender, sex drive is up but can't get to a stopping point. My milk production is close to nothing. I am beggining to think if I should continue. I have an 11m old son and still breastfeeding. Has anyone experience all these side effects?

I started the patch last month. Followed the directions. During weeks 1-3, I couldn't stop eating. During "week off" I went into a depression and had suicidal thoughts - this is TOTALLY not like me. Depression lifted within an hour of applying new patch. The Dr. wanted to put me on anti-depressants, but I don't want to go that road. I have a great life, 3 beautiful girls and a wonderful husband. I am getting OFF the patch permanently and would not recommend.

I HATE this thing. I have had so many side effects! Here's the list: HUGE breasts (went up a whole cup size), swollen hands, breakthrough bleeding, headaches, losing my hair (you wouldn't believe how much hair is coming out of my head), severe skin irritation (crazy itching), and an incredible appetite. I have also had the same problems with them not sticking. I have 2 months left and I'll throw them away.

I've been on the patch for about 3 months now. Most of the adverse side effects subsided, but the areas I applied the patch on my body have discolored and I've got several dark patch looking spots on my skin. :( It also gets very itchy sometimes underneath the patch. I get bad pressure/tension headaches which I have been dealing with by applying the patch at night before I go to sleep. Because of the skin discoloration, I am considering switching to the hormonal ring which is supposed to work the same way as the patch, except you insert it in your vagina and you only have to insert it once a month and take it out during your off week.

I was taking Aleese BC pills, which were fine - no obvious side effects, but decided the patch may be healthier (as I heard it does not go thru the liver because you are not taking it "orally"). After 3 mos. of Aleese bcp's, I began the patch and after putting on the 3rd patch (my first month of use), I began heavy breakthrough bleeding (like menst.cycle), and swollen abdomen & very sore & tender uterine area (feeling as if I did 1000 sit ups)!...Bad uterine pain. Also, horribly moody & inability to concentrate. I plan to go back to Aleese BC pills immediately after this patch. Not for me.

This is the first time I have ever been on any form of birth control. And I'm not sure how I feel about the patch. First off, this is my week off...does anyone know when I will get my period??? Second, the silly thing peels all the time. I've tried it on my abdomen and my buttocks, it just won't stick to me for a whole week. My breasts hurt all the time, the positive side to this is I don't seem to have my usually "lashing out" mood swings. The part that I'm worried about is: WHEN WILL I GET MY PERIOD?

I absolutely HATED the patch. I hated the dirty band-aid ring, I hated seeing on my skin, but worst of all, I hated the acne that it caused. I broke out in the most terrible acne I have had since puberty. Huge terrible pimples. I actually had two coworkers ask me what was wrong with my face, because it had been okay before. After about 3 cycles of the patch I called my doctor and asked for a switch. She put me on Yasmin, and I've been happy ever since.

I used the patch about 4 years ago and recently went back on it. I love it! Aside from occasional nausea, which only lasts for the first few months, I feel great! My breasts have gone from a size B to a large C after only 2 weeks of using it. I can't complain about that. I love not having to remember to taka a pill everyday and the uncontrollable vomiting that came along with it. For those of you, who have been on Ortho Evra for a short while, hang in there. Everyone's body is different. Just because one person had a bad reaction to the patch doesn't mean you will and you need to give it some time for your body to adjust to it.

Within 24 hours I began feeling nauseous and had terrible moody outbursts. I have also been having depressed thoughts and food cravings, like others have said. I STRONGLY DISCOURAGE anyone who hates feeling like vomiting to avoid the patch. I'm going back to the shot. I'd rather faint once every three months than feel nauseous constantly.

I switched to the patch for the convenience and because I had problems with NuvaRing, but will never use it again. After a few months I experienced breakthrough bleeding the last few days of each patch, my periods got much heavier and lasted anywhere from 7 - 10 days. This continued for an entire year and never improved. Plus, you have to deal with the not so sexy black goop that forms around the patch and the dry skin near the application site and I had no sex drive whatsoever. I'm back on the pill and will likely never switch again since these long term options just don't seem to work well thanks to the uncontrollable level over the long term.

I am so bloated I cant wear most of my clothes and my sex drive is totally limited. I hate it. And I cannot get any information about how to make a change to something new. The people at Ortho Evra have no information about what to do to STOP using it....all they can tell you is how to stick it on...like any moron needs to be told how to put a sticker on their body. Anyway, I am taking it off literally as I write this. It is nice to be able to have unlimited, unplanned sex but if you feel like a fat, bloated pig with boobs too painful to touch I guess you wont be having too much sex. Good luck out there...

My sister can't take any other hormonal contraceptives -- she throws up too much -- but the patch is working great for her.

The patch has also worked well for me, for about a year now, I think. I always had a patch-shaped red mark at the site of application after removing it, but recently the time it takes until that red patch appears and starts itching has decreased. At this point, when I remove the patch I have a swollen red welt, 1 3/4" square, and very itchy. I've started moving it more frequently to deal with the itchiness, and now it only takes 2 days to get such a welt. Anyway, I'm switching off the patch. If I have to move it every day because of itchiness I'll be quickly covered head to toe in red welts, and I may have trouble getting it to continue sticking.

I am on my 6th week of using the patch and I love it. I experienced breakthrough bleeding the first month, spotting weeks 2-4. My breasts were very tender for the first month and I had minor skin irritation with the first patch. The best(and most unexpected) side effect for me was that my breasts have increased in size from a largeA/small B to a large B. My left breast was about 1/2 a cup size smaller than the right, and now they have evened out. The side effects I experienced in the first month have been well worth what I consider the "good" side effect. I was previously on the ring, which I loved when it stayed where it was supposed to, but most months it dropped to the opening of my vagina which I found incredibly irritating. The patch does seem to have more side effects than most other forms of B.C., but I have found they subside after the first month.

I have been using birth control for some years, and since my diagnosis of Endometriosis I have been using it continuously and only having four periods a year. After failed luck with the pill I have switched to the patch - but I am not sure about it yet. My side effects have decreased since I have used the patch. I don't have as many headaches, nausa, vomiting, bleeding, weight gain or mood swings - but, I have horrible skin reactions. I feel like my application sight skin will fall off. I have very sensitve skin and worry that I am going to have to give up on the patch because of the terrible reaction that I get from having it on over the week (it is worse then having a bee sting, sunburn and chicken pocks on the same place). Otherwise I like it a lot - but don't think I can live with it. Has anyone who has sensitive skin been able to use it>?

Been on several other BCP's and all gave me mood swings and weight gain. The patch, however, has worked very well. Had some nausea at the begining, but it went away. No weight gain, no breakthrough bleeding, some breast enlargement (but that's good if you're an A), and some moodiness during the off week (but PMS without BCPs is just as bad). As you can see from the posts, everybody responds differently to these kinds of drugs, the only way to find out is to try...

I've been on the patch for nearly a year, and on the whole it has been great--easy to remember, regular periods, peace of mind. The first few times I applied it, I experienced nausea for a day--on occasion I still feel a little under the weather for a couple hours--but on the whole, no serious side effects, and not having to worry about taking a pill every day is well worth it. The thing that is EXCEEDINGLY annoying though is the fact it does NOT perfectly stay on a whole week like they say--on the last day or so, it usually feels loose. It's ridiculous to replace it on the LAST day of each week, but I'm a nervous wreck on that last day wondering if I'm getting enough of the hormone. It also gets very itchy and doesn't smell very nice because I've been sweating underneath it all week. Anyone have any solutions for this?

I took the patch away 3 days ago and this site is the first one where I found women sharing same experience ! the patch was nothing for me, had howfull headaches , pain in the legs, feeling all the blood was going suddenly into my head, high blood pressure, heart not going under 100 /min...etc...I thought at the beginning the body had to get use to it but on friday it has been so hawfull (cramp in the leg and at the same moment blood pressure in the head) that I took it away. Now I have a super headache since but I am sure this is due to the hormons going out of the body slowly. Do not be ashame if you have problems with evra, simply tell your doc that this is not something for you....this things give me the feeling to be too strong for me...for info I am 50 kilo. excuse my english, I am not native.

I am wondering if anyone experiences severe headaches during the week that the patch is OFF. I have not had any other problems and love the patch overall. My patch change day is Sunday. When I am off of the patch I usually make it until Thursday-Friday and on one occasion Saturday until the headaches come. My doctor felt that as the hormones leave my body, one of the side effects are severe headaches. She recommened an estrogen patch but my headaches continued. If you have this same problem and have conquered it, please help.

I would not recommend this to anyone. I was on the pill and thought this would be easier. NO WAY! I was on it for about two weeks. I got diharea and kept it the whole time. So severe that as soon as I sat back down after comeing from the bathroom, terrible cramps and I was back on the toilet. I removed it in the middle of my week and within days it was gone. Not for me!

I even had surgery, but they keep coming back! Has anyone else had or heard of someone else having these problems?

I have been on the patch for 2 months and have noticed that my breasts are getting larger and I don't feel as moody as I did when I was on Allesse. The only thing that really bothers me is that the skin under the patch gets extremely itchy at times. My breasts are also a little tender, but that's ok considering they are almost a whole size bigger. It would also be great if they could make the patch smaller, because it is huge. I was on oral contraceptives for 8 years and never was completely satisfied because I would forget, or get really moody and depressed at times. Overall, I am pleased, and would highly recomend the patch.

I was on the patch for 4 months. It was great while I was on it, but I stopped taking it because of the health risks. I am also a smoker, so that also made the health risks bigger. I noticed on my last month while I was on it, I started feeling chest pains. It hurt every single time I breathed in, and sometimes I was able to feel it in my back. The doctors said that I had an inflammed muscle by my lung, and it wasn't anything serious. I don't know if it actually was from the patch, but all I know is that I haven't felt it in a while, and I have been off it since 12/03. I really regret it, because I had switched from ortho cyclen to the patch, and it was great while I was on it. I never forgot to change it. It did itch where the patch was on, and that was like the only side effect I had, until I felt the chest pains. But I am off birth control now, and I am not really sure if I care to get pregnant, I've been with my boyfriend for 3 years and I live with him too.

Hi,
I was on bc pills for 2 years straight. Then I got on the depo shot for one year. Then I got back on the bc pills. I've been on bc pills for the last 2 years. I've been using the patch for the past 3 weeks. I have severe breast tenderness and pain. I've been bleeding and spotting for the entire month. Now it's my NO PATCH WEEK and normally my period would come on Wednesday's. Well guess what.....today is Thursday and I have no period. I have my regular spotting going on and mild cramping, but no period. Has anyone else experienced this when switching from the pills to the patch? Is this normal?

I'm not for sure if I am going to continue using the patch, but I do think it's one of the best forms of birth control. I was also wondering if anyone has ever experienced lower back pain and menstraul cramps; after their period while using the patch?

I started the patch the first Sunday after my period ended. I put on the patch at about 8am and by 3pm. I started itching all over my body. I then noticed blotches all over my skin where I was itching. I then removed the patch and put cortisone on the blotchy areas. Around 9pm the itching subsided and by midnight... the blotches on my skin were gone. It was a very scary event. Also, I felt nausea and kind of "sick" feeling. No more patch for me and I tell everyone I know about my experiences!

I had been on the patch for 11 months for period regulation. It seems to have worked overall and I had no side affects at first. The longer I took the patch it seemed the worse things got. The first few months were great, and then my hair started falling out in crazy amounts (Every time I washed or brushed my hair it would be coming out in clumps yet I could find no bald spots), and in the last couple of months of useage I started itching all over to the point where I was and still am leaving gouge marks on my skin from scratching so much, it feels like something is crawling on me and then I scratch and scratch sometimes to the point of making myself bleed. I also did get some irritation at the patch site.
Now I have been off the patch for just about a month because hubby and I want to have a baby. I am still itching like mad, though my hair is not falling out as much anymore, but now I am four days late for my period, I have been having the worst gas cramps imaginable and my breasts are killing me. Overall I would not recommend the patch I just don't think the damage it has done is worth it. If there is anyone out there that has come off the patch and then had a baby could you e-mail me please? I am wondering how long it takes for your body to get back to normal, and how long it took to get pregnant.
Thanks,
Jennifer

I'm in the second month of patch therapy and am feeling extremely depressed (Note: I don't have a history of depression). This morning, I woke up feeling nauseous and sad and understanding how it is that depressed individuals could want to commit suicide because of feeling so bad.

I spoke to a pharmacist and to my doctor; both said that there are often side effects the first few months...but if it's so bad that you can't stand it (I can't), then it's time to get off of it. So, I'm switching to the Nuvaring this afternoon. It has much less estrogen in it and in general, fewer side effects. I really hope I feel better...

I have recently switched from depo-provera to the patch, and my body has gone completely nuts :):(! Birth control works defferent for everyone, but these have been my experiences with the patch so far -
Good reactions:
I no longer feel extremely tired or depressed like I did on depo
I am no longer gaining tons of weight (I gained twenty pounds in one year on depo)-I have actually lost quite a few pounds now :)
Not so good reactions:
Actually I have mixed feelings about this because I have been in an A cup all my life (I'm currently 22), but my breasts have gotten huge! I have, in a two week span, grown out of all of my bras - even the ones that were a little too big to begin with. I have no idea what size I am exactly, but I'll definitely be shopping for new bras this weekend. The only down side to this for me is that my breasts have been A LOT more tender lately! This kind of comes and goes, but I'm am hoping that it gets a little better with time. If not, I guess I'll be switching to something else yet again - grrrr.

I've been on the patch for two years now and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's easy to keep up with, I lost weight, my breasts increased a cup size, and I finally have normal periods. The only side affects I have found are severe cramps on my week off as well has a slight depression. Also, the third week of my patch I'm hungry all the time. As compared to Ortho Cyclen my sex drive has gone down but all the yeast infections I used to get are almost null and void. Honestly, every woman should give it the three month trial, there's really nothing to loose.

Hot, Nauseas all the time, General sick feeling. The patch has been better in this arena with only short periods of feeling like I would throw up but replacing that is an extreme maylaise and added depression. I can't hardly function. I was recently put on the patch to regulate/shorten my out-of-control heavy periods (lasting 15-20 days ave.), breakthrough bleeding, etc. Then additionally found out I have an enormous fibroid tumor adding to the problem. Now my fibroid has gotten even larger on it. I had also heard many women's breasts get larger on OE (which I looked forward to). Well, I was an A before - and an A after. Now I am experiencing non-stop bleeding, abdominal pain, and depression and it has only been one month. I have NEVER experienced depression more than a few hours here and there in my life. Is this something other women get on OE? Love to hear from someone else.

Hi, my daughter has been on this patch since Jan. 2004 and 2weeks after being on it she had a pap done and it came back abnormal. She had to go thru a biopsy and then surgery to scrape the bad cells off. A very very painful procedure. Her 6 week check up after surgery came back clear. It's now been 3 months since the surgery and another pap has been performed and u guessed it, the abnormal cells are back which means going thru the whole procedure again. It is very very painful by the way.
Other symtoms she has experienced are: nausea, loss of hair and breast enlargement.
I was just wondering if any one else has had an abnormal pap smear.
Thanks for listening.

On the patch, I have had incredible mood swings. During the first month, the only side effects were sore breasts. However, as I kept using the drug, within the first couple of days of applying a new patch, I became really irritable and moody. I always pick fights. And then after the fact, I realize I had no real reason of being that way. I'm glad I have a husband that understands what I am going through. Also, I have had a family history of depression so using the patch only worsens the case. I have no reservations in discontinuing the patch. Does the pill have similar adverse reactions?

The only thing positvive I can say about this patch is the fact that you don't have to remember to take the pill everyday. Other then that, this patch is awful!!!! The patch causes skin discoloration...believe me seeing rings of the patch left on your skin is not attractive. Menstrual cramps have increased. During weeks 1-3 I have abdominal cramping as well. I have bad headaches. I noticed I have alot of my hair falling out of my head. I have been very irritable and depressed (which is not how I usually am) On top of that, I have an unusual vaginal discharge. One month I started my period during week 3 instead of during week 4. My periods never start the same day. My patch change day is on a Sunday and my period will usually start anywhere between Monday and Thursday. This is awful! I don't ever remember having this many side effects while on a birth control pill. I am going to my gyno here soon to get off this thing!

I've been on the Evra patch for 2 months and I'm getting off this thing! The first month I had the usual breast tenderness (and boy did they get a cup or so bigger) and nausea that you get when starting a new birth control hormone, then I started to get headaches and I couldn't lose any weight. And my patch seemed to get less adhesive before the week was up and this would worry me because birth control is very important to me right now. I thought gettin' off the pill and going to the patch would be the way to go, but after 2 months I'm ditchin' the patch and going back to the pill. I never had any problems at all with the pill, I just thought the patch would be easier. I highly recommend anyone wanting to switch to the patch to reconsider!

if u are having problems with the patch staying on i suggest cleaning the area where u want to put the patch with rubbing alchohol before you apply it......it seems to dry out the area and the patch stays on all week....also if u use your blow dryer on a warm setting it melts the adhesive enough to make a loose patch stick better

I started using the patch over a year ago and it's worked extremely well for me. I like knowing the week I'm going to have my period and using this product has actually made my periods easier to deal with. I used to have very bad cramps, particularly on the first day of my cycle, but since I've been on the patch, they've been non-existent and I've noticed my flow has been lighter. The only side effect I've had is some itching and I notice that when I remove the old patch at the end of week, my skin is a bit discolored, but that usually goes away in a day or less.

I've always had trouble swallowing pills, so choosing the patch was absolutely the best choice I could have made.

I am relieved to read some of the comments re: the patch. I have been on the patch for about a year and a half now and over the last 4 months or so the side effects have been getting worse and worse....like clockwork, about two days after I take the 3rd patch off I get horrible headaches that cause me to throw up and they usually last at least 3 days. Really bad depression the week I get my period- almost suicidal- way more severe than it's ever been on the pill... not to mention I am fiercly irritable the week I have the 3rd patch on. I realize that these are common and sometimes expected symptoms of pms but I have never experienced these symptoms so bad before. I thought I was losing my mind!!! I thought the patch was great at first but like a number of women have mentioned the symptoms get worse and worse the longer you are on it.

My doctor put me on the patch to regulate my periods. I have four kids and after a emergency c-section with my daughter, my periods have been 18 to 21 day cycles. Plus, I have ovarian pain consistantly. My doc put me on the patch to straighten out my cycle, and hopefully the ovary pain. ( I had my husband fixed, so birth control isn't really the motive). I applied the patch first day of my period and I have had severe mood swings since about the second day. My period was light, but I cramped. ( after four kids, menstral cramps are normally non-exsistant!) I am really worried about the mood swings. Extremely fatigued, depressed, very very irritable. Is this normal?

First the breast discomfort was more than I could handle, my breast went from a c to a DD in less than one months time. I gained about 12 pounds in the course of a two weeks (and I have never ever gained weight before) then came the stomach cramps, they were so bad that I had to be hospitalized and had numerous tests done. I also started getting yeast infections which I had never had before! All of this occured in the course of 3 weeks!!!! BE VERY CAREFUL!! I would recommend looking into all options before committing to one . I wish I had. I went on the patch and soon began to experience side effects such as mood swings, depression, stomach pains. The only thing it regulated was my period. I also gained weight which wasn't a plus.

I have been using the patch for about 4 months now and so far so good! The only side effect I found was in the first 2 months a few days before my period I would get a yeast infection. Now however after speaking to my obgyn she said that was normal in the beginning and to add yogurt as part of my diet and a few days before my period use one dose of monistat, and I have not had another infection! I really stand behind the patch!!!!

I have had pros and cons. I have been on this approx 7 months. Pros: My period is on time and my breasts are 1 cup larger. Cons: I have had breakthrough bleeding but worst of all I now have yiest infections regularly. I just realized this is caused from the Patch through reading other womens stories on this site. I am now going to discontinue use.

I started using the patch January of 2005 because I have fiborids really bad, and my period would begain and then it would not want to stop I've tryed 4 different birth control pills to regulate my period and they never help, I would have headace really bad, I always felt that I was going to vomit, and I could not control my mood swings, but when I began to use the patch I had no problems. My period comes on a regular basics its starts on Wednesday and ends on Sunday. I've started eating right and sleeping regular. I have found that the patch is the best thing that has happen to me since.... I can't remember. But if i had to recommend the patch to anyone I would, but like any medication it may or may not work for you, so good luck

I started using the patch on two months after I had my daughter and noticed that during the week I had it on, I developed a weird vaginal discharge, my cycle lasted longer than usual, left and then returned again, as heavy as before. I took that thing off and threw it away. I am going to find another method of birth control to use. Now that I think about it, if I continue bleeding like I am, I wont have to worry about birth control because my husband and I wont be able to do anything!

i have been on the "patch" for a year. When I first began the patch after about three days began to itch. But it is better than getting pegnant. My patch has never fallen off but it does get a rim of my cotton t-shirt color fuss. After the first month my breast started to hurt but my husband and I noticed my breast had started to grow.I had notice darker areas after I took off the patch but they faded after a few days. My recommedation would be to use the patch. If you like keep it if you don't there is always the shot.

Well, I just started the patch last month and so far, so good. I haven't had any side effects anybody listed above. No mood swings or anything like that, no yeast infections, no nausea....so I love it! I've only been on it for one full month and I already see my breats getting larger, my boyfriend noticed it too :). The fact that you only have to change it once a week is so much easier for me. The only thing I had a problem with, was when I got my period I ended up having some really bad cramps, and I never had cramps at all when I got my period. Although, someone told me that it goes away, so hopefully next month will be better. I definitely recommend it.

I have been on the patch for about a year now. I still continue to have headaches sometimes severe so I just take tylenol and it will go away. I still experience diaherra sometimes. My periods were always on time...until now. Here the past few months, my patches have became loose around the edges and sometimes almost completely off (only attached by a small section in the middle of the patch)I don't notice it until I get into the shower AFTER I have had sex! Now my period is three days late, my breast are swollen, it hurts when I press right above my belly button, I feel very tired and I'm eating like a hog! could i be pregnant or is this some unknown side affects of the patch? Anyone that has any clue, please email me! thank you and good luck to patch users!

Michelle numbness May 12th, 2008 Rating: Not Rated
I have been on the patch for over a year now. I have had side effects from the start. At first side, effects were very mild. I didn't associate the patch with my problems. My side effects have gotten really bad, they include: headaches, chest pain, blurred eyesite, numbness in my feet, legs, side, neck and face. I am healthy and have always been extremely active, never had eye problems or limb problems, nothing.
I have been trying to figure out what is going on with me, so I went to the doctor and asked him could this be associated with the patch. His reply: I don't think so, this sounds like MS. He is sending me to a specialist, neuroligist. I have been in so much pain, I have done research of my own. Tonight I discoverd I am not alone. These are symptoms other women are having with the patch. Some have died and others have had strokes or blood clots. I do believe the surgery I have had on my eyes two months ago is associated now with the patch. I almost went blind. No one in my family has ever worn glasses or has had any eye problems, not one.
I was having terrible headaches and they found blood clots in my eyes and fluid trapped, they had to do emergency surgery to correct it.
I will let you all know my outcome, next week is my appointment with the neuroligist, I bet he will let me know if it is caused by the patch.
BE CAREFUL.....If you have any leg pain or numbness it could be a blood clot. Go to the doctor don't wait like I have.

I don't know if anyone has seen the latest about the patch. Our local newspaper (Racine Journal Times) ran a story about how the Patch is being linked to deaths in woman. Women are experiencing severe headaches, which are caused by blood clots. Which have killed several women.
I am on the patch, and also experience severe headaches. Most LIKELY a coincedence, however I am a mother of a beautiful 17 month old, and will not be a risk taker by staying on this patch. I do like the convience of the patch, but in no way will I continue until I see or hear that this is a safe alternative.

I love the patch. For all the people who has went from one birth control to the patch. You have to remember your still having the side effects of the other birth control also. And everybody is different so the side effects fit our body. I been on the pill, depo, and the patch. I think that the patch is the best one and if you hang in there it work and you have less side effects than the others.

I too have had severe headaches, mostly occurring during the week off the patch, and am ready to quit the patch like so many of the other writers. I've also been feeling depressed and get extremely moody during the week of my period, its just not worth it to feel this crappy, I'd rather use condoms. I am 37 and have a 13 year old son and don't want anymore children but I am sick of being on birth control. I don't care what the drug manufacturers tell us about bc pills and the patch being safe, they are only safe to a point. Yes we need to have control over our fertility but not to the point that we are debilitated by headaches, puking, swollen breasts and the rest. Count me and my co-pay out Ortho Evra.

I am curious to know the time frame for getting pregnant after stopping the patch. Does anyone know? I called Ortha - Evra but they really didn't know.

My boyfriend has been telling me the past week he has noticed a big change in my personality, he said I seem sad and blaa, not my nomal self. I have also had a yeast infection that has lasted for the past 2 weeks and over the counter med. hasn't worked and so my doc. called in Diflucan for me, but it is not working either. I feel really bloated and very hungry all the time, but after I eat my stomach hurts!! I go to the doc. tomorrow,to see what can be done about the yeast infection, and I can't decide if I want to switch birth control again?!! I don't want to go through the hassel of changing if all this is in my head. Then again I haddn't heard anyone else was going thru these so called side effects until I read these so I guess it can't just be in my head!! I think I will change my birth control tomorrow anyway cause I feel bad to be putting my body and my boyfriend thru such crap!!!

But the side effects have been getting worse and worse the longer I'm on it. This last month I was absolutely horrid to my husband and kids - just mean and ornery . . . totally unlike me. I was depressed and angry and have had constant headaches for about 2 months. I have also heard a lot of people couldn't conceive after being on the patch? This is scary - I know I want another baby and don't want to risk it, there has to be something better for me out there!

I used Ortho Evra for a year or so. At the start of each cycle, patch 1, I always felt sick and nautious, but it subsides within 3 days. I felt fine the rest of the month. After removing patch 3, my period would start withing 2 days, always. If you can deal with the yucky feeling at the begginning of each patch 1, go for it. I found it to be very easy and dependable. Be careful though, I wanted to let myself be patch free for a month, and wound up pregnant 3 weeks after stopping my patch. Don't let this happen to you.

Even if you havent had any type of side effects for the first month or so, keep watching, cause i didnt realize that my feelings were a result of such a HIGH-RISK, damaging and unreliable, contraceptive. I would not reccommend the Ortho Evra Patch to anyone.

I just started week 2 of the patch and so far have experienced huge cravings. I can't seem to eat enough. I've also experienced a slight drop in my sex drive and a slight soreness of the breasts. I think they are getting bigger, but not so much that I've seen a difference so far. I've researched that increased chance of blood clot and think i'm basically playing russian roulet. But you take that type of risk with every birth control. This one is just slightly more of a risk. I tried the Depo shot before and bleed steadily for 6 months with no cramps, but what's the use of going on birth control if you can't have sex because you are so sore on the inside from bleeding all the time? Hopefully i lose weight like some of the others and i don't get any more side effects. i can work off the food i eat. but i can't work off headaches, nausea, and diarreha. best of luck to all and it's worth it to try anything at least once.

Everyone is different, so the patch will effect us all differently. My personal experience with the patch has brought me more distress than convenience. Sure it's easier than taking a pill once a day but I get these wierd tingling feelings on and under my skin around the area eveytime i apply a new patch. Its only lasts a few hours but it is uncomfortable. Then it itches all week. thank goodness i havent had any serious rashes. My breasts havent got that much bigger to make me feel better about the weight i have gained due to increased, and sometimes uncontrollable appetite(unlike me,i am a fit freak)and loss of motivation. did i also mention the horrible mean mood-swings i get when i am off it? i swear this patch has withdrawl side-effects! oh and i am having a hard time concentrating on one thing at a time at work and school. (not like me either.) Oh and horrible pregnancy-like nausea in the a.m. the first 2 months! I have given this patch 3 months and the rest of the effects havent calmed at all. No more! I should have listened to my mother!

I had been on ortho evra for 6 months about a year ago. Durring the 6 months I experienced horrible irritation problems where i put my patch.I would get horrble bumps almost like a huge bug bite about as big as the patch and it was always where I put the patch. I would put in in a different place every time as not to further irritate an area. In hopes that it would go away. I got to the point where I would have two or three of these bumps at a time. After I stopped usuing ortho evra they went away quickly. But now, almost a year later I have one of the bumps again and I wouldnt have thought of ortho evra because it has been so long but... it is in the one location I put the patch the most frequently. I really don't know what to do about it. I dont have insurance to go to the doctor. I have been waiting it out to see if it goes away but it seems to be getting worse. I have had it for about 3 weeks now. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Please contact me if so. mansonsminion@yahoo.com

I used Ortho Evra for almost two years and at first I loved it. There was no inconvenience at all involved in slapping a sticker on my butt once a week and I only had two fall off in all that time. I wasn't a big fan of the band-aid dirt ring it left but once I found a 'sweet spot' so to speak, it wasn't such a big problem. The only thing I had to deal with was scratching my butt in public every so often. But then after a couple months (I can't believe I stayed on it so long) I started getting these terrible headaches...always on the left side of my head and so bad I would generally just not be able to move. Blurred vision, sensitivity to light, but scariest of all, FACIAL DROOP! I am a paramedic and recognized the signs of stroke or TIA each and every month, sometimes 2 or 3 times. I had no insurance and never went to the hospital but it has always made me wonder what was going on. Then I began to gain weight until eventually I had reached the magic 198 pound mark and was taken off my nurse practitioner because she said the patch would then be less effective. Since then I have started using the Nuva Ring (for 8 months now) with NO adverse effects at all, neither my fiancee and I feel it during sex, NO HEADACHES!!! I have had a little trouble losing the excess weight and I'm not sure why that is, but to make a long story longer, I will never be using the patch again! A potential death is NOT worth it!!

I haven't been on the patch for about 5 years but a friend of mine with similar symptoms referred me to this website.

I began the patch when I was about 19 years old because I have severe pain due to my period. I tried about 4 other brands of birth control and nothing helped with the pain. My OB-GYN put me on the patch and gave me instructions to continue the patch without a week break as a method to basically stop my period. I was on it for more or less 3 months. I got my first migraine about a month after first taking it. I have been getting migraines monthly at least, ever since. Before using the patch, I never had a migraine, now I am suffering still. I also had major nausea while on the patch which isn't that uncommon for any type of birth control pill.

Right before I discontinued ortho evra, I had my period for over a month. This was the initial cause for me to discontinue that method.

As soon as I stopped the patch my face broke out with a form of acne that is known as cystic pimples. They were so painful and huge and lasted for about 2 years. I still have major scarring from it and still have minor acne.

The only positive thing was my breasts became a cup larger. But that was definitely not worth the pain I am still going through. I wasn't on the birth control to make my breasts larger anyway. Please be careful before you try this method. My guess it that women with hormonal issues should not use this method, I have terrible hormonal problems and feel this may have contributed to my symptoms. So please be careful and evaluate your specific needs and do research on different methods.

Susan I HATE IT!! May 12th, 2008 Rating: Not Rated
Hi Ladies,
I am so happy to have come across this site!! I have been on the patch for about three months now. My doctor put me on it because I have a very, very painful cyst on my left ovary. He says the patch will "put the cyst
to sleep". I am 48 years old and have had a tubal ligation, so I am not
using the patch for birth control. I am absolutely NOT HAPPY with the patch for soooo many reasons. I have insomnia, I have this horrible, horrible red itcy rash from head to toe. This rash is unlike anything I
have ever experienced. It sometimes feels like someone is stabbing me with a big poker, it hurts really bad. I scratch and scratch and scratch,
until I feel like I am going to scratch my skin completely off!!! I even
bleed from the scratching!!! I can't lie still at all because of this rash!! I am having severe headaches, and no medication relieves the pain.
I have been EXTREMELY tired, have been EXTREMELY moody and angry, irritable and mean. I now have acne, and severe hair loss. My eyes are
constantly bothering me. I now have blurred vision, red itchy, watering and goopy eye discharge every single day. The only good side of this patch
is that all my life I have suffered from extremely heavy periods that keep
me home for days because I have to change my pad and tampon every 10 to 15 minutes. Now on the patch I barely have any bleeding with my period, but
the bleeding is brown instead of red, which worries me. It just doesn't seem normal or healthy to me at all. My breasts are very tender now and I also have the abdominal pain and bloating. I took my 3rd week patch off today (Monday) when it should stay on until Friday. I just can't stand the
rash any longer and I would rather suffer the extreme pain of the cyst than
to be this incredibly miserable. I realize that this works for some women,
but definitley NOT FOR ME. Ladies please listen to your body and follow
your instincts, if you feel something is being caused by this patch...then
just tear it off and forget about it. It is just not worth losing your
quality of life for!!!

I had a baby in Feb 2005. I got on the patch in May, and had been on it until my prescription ran out in November (6 months) At first I LOVED it! I but soon the negative effects of the patch were getting worse, although I didn't realize the symptoms were related to the patch. I was growing depressed EXPONENTIALLY... the 5th and 6th month I was not sleeping at all each night. I felt like my sinuses were stuffed up for two months straight. I thought I had a head cold I couldn't shake. By the end of the 6th month the pressure was giving me blurry vision. I felt like I was never really awake. I wanted to SLEEP all the time, and I just couldn't get rested! I felt like I had "medicine head" all the time... dizzy, detached, groggy. My hair fell out ALOT in the shower, but I thought nothing of it because you typically lose alot of hair after having a baby. I LOST weight on the patch- size 10 to size 4 in 6 months. Absolute lack of apetite. I had to force myself to eat. I got yeast infections 2 days before each period. And ALOT of vaginal discharge- I was getting really frustrated!

NOW I've been off the patch for three weeks, and I FINALLY feel normal again! The depression VANISHED almost overnight along with the severe anxiety and suicidal thoughts. My head cleared up, my energy has returned, I'm sleeping better and I feel like I can function again. BUT I have gained weight- in three weeks I've gone from a size 2/4 to a 7/8. I now look like I did at 4-5 months pregnant. And I am STARVING all the time! Painful, ravenous hunger that gnaws at me morning till night. And I am urinating way too much for the amount of fluid I'm drinking. I have to pee 2-3 times at night now. The first two weeks I was pretty nauseus. But my hair no longer falls out in clumps. WILL THIS HUNGER and weight gain go away as my body adjusts to this new hormone level?

I have read alot of reviews, and it seems most people are the same, the longer you are on the patch, the more these side effects creep in, and they slowly get worse. Many people have probably felt tired, depressed, foggy headed and , like me, have NO idea the patch is the direct cause. Within 4 days after quitting (4 days after my last period, when I did NOT put on a new patch) I felt "cured"

I have use the patch for a while and I just recently noticed that my desire to have sex was deminishing with time. I did not think it would be the patch but I have read many comments from here a a lot of women are having the same problem. I had one of my ovaries removed when I was younger and I thought it would be the decreased testosterone levels, but now I will try to get off the patch to see if that is the problem. If you also have the problem pass it along.

i have been on the patch for almost 3 years now, and so far no side effects have occured. however if i put the patch anywhere but on my buttocks, i have severe itching and rashs even months after i remove it. i have also noticed that i am never interested in sex. i used to crave sex and now it doesnt bother me to go weeks without it. this not only bothers me but makes my fiancee feel like i dont find him attractive... hell of a method for birth control though if u dont have sex, you cant get pregnant.

I've been off the patch for a month and a half now, because I couldn't stand all the awful side effects. But, I haven't had a period yet. Has anyone else stopped using birth control and had a delay in getting their next period? basically, do I need to be freaking out and thinking I'm pregnant, or do I need to just calm down because this is sort of normal.

The most noticeable side effects that I have experienced with Ortho Evra have been sudden cramping during the "on-patch" weeks, enlarged boobs (I've gained about a cup and a half...from a B to a large C), bloating, and mood swings to the point of crying for no reason...although this only happens on my off-week. It's the first method I tried, and I like it...not too bad. I'm just kinda concerned about the whole blot clot thing.

I FORGOT TO PUT IN MY PATCH THE SUNDAY AND I PUT IT BACK 4 DAYS LATER (THURSDAY) THE NEXT THING THAT I KNOW IS THAT I AM IN MY MENSTRUATION AND I STILL HAVE 1 PATCH LEFT TO PUT ON?? WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET BACK TO THE NORMAL CYCLE AND START CHANGING THEM THE SUNDAYS? I HAVE BEEN USING THE PATCH FOR 5 MONTHS, AND I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE. CURRENTLY I AM WEARING THE PATCH AND I AM ON MENSTRUATION. SHOULD I LEAVE MY PATCH ON TILL NEXT THURSDAY AND SO ON. AND THEN DURING THE WEEK OF, INSTEAD OF PUTTING ON THURSDAY , START AGAIN WITH SUNDAYS?

I've been on the patch now for almost 2 years, I've recently stared to lose my hair. I'm totally freaked cause I have really long thick hair. I've been losing so much that I've clogged my bathtub 2times in the past month. I'm getting off the patch. The hormones isn't worth our health ladies. I was on the pill for like 5 years before I switched and I didn't have this problem. I hope my hair grows back:( Has anyone else experienced hairloss?

I have been on the patch since May 2, 2006. I just gave birth to my daughter on April 5, 2006. During my 3rd week on the patch i had started bleeding heavy. The doctor said to take the patch off and treat that as my off week. That sunday i replaced my patch and started the cycle again on the first week. During my second week i had sex. For the past week I have been dealing with feelings of nausea and stomach pains. I have just taken my patch off for my off week and I am worried about when and if i will get my period or if i could be pregnant again. Please help.

Samantha Side Effects May 12th, 2008 Rating: Not Rated
I recently just removed the patch PERMANATELY! I have been on the patch for almost a year now, and after hearing soo many stories about side effects that the patch causes, I just said "to hell with it" and ripped it off. Granted the patch is more convenient then taking a pill every day and you know when to expect your period, but the side effects are not worth it. I'd rather use another form of b.c. then have to deal with what I've been dealing with which is: blurred vision, headaches(mostly on one side of my head), irritability, moodswings, and also shortness of breath. You name it, and I've probably had it at some point or another. Some women have said that their cup size has increased.. I guess their some of the lucky ones because I haven't noticed a change and like I said I've been on it for almost a year now. We as women, should not have to worry about a bunch of crazy side effects when all we're trying to do is either regulate our periods or prevent unwanted pregnancies. Yes, the manufacturer lists SOME side effects that are possible, but they do not name all. And the scary thing is that there probably are more out there that we still do not know about. So my advice to all females that are currently on the patch.. **Please be careful and if you start to notice changes that you've never noticed before you started using the patch, TAKE IT OFF and get on something new. You just might be saving yourself from more than just a yeast infection or re-occuring headache.... think about it.

I HAVE BEEN ON THE PATCH SINCE 12/05 I FINALLY REALIZED THE STUFF THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME SINCE I HAVE BEEN ON THE PATCH IS BECAUSE OF THE PATCH. I HAVE KIDNEY STONES,HEADACHES,SPOTTING THROUGH THE WHOLE MONTH, YEAST INFECTIONS ALOT,BLOATING THAT MAKES ME LOOK 3 MONTHS PREGO. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE NO MATTER HOW BIG YOU BREASTS GET. THE STUFF THAT COULD HAPPEN COULD BE MORE DANGEROUS THAN YOU THINK.BE CAREFUL IF YOU DECIDE TO USE IS. THIS IS MY SECOND TIME USING THE PATCH I USED IT BEFORE I GOT PREGO WITH MY DAUGHTER AND STARTED USING IT AGAIN AFTER SHE WAS BORN. THE FIRST TIME IT WORKED GREAT BUT FOR SOME REASON AFTER I STARTED USING IT AGAIN I GOT BAD SIDE AFFECTS AND MUCH MORE. THINK ABOUT IT AND DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO USE IT.

See the way i see it...everyone is informed of the side effects it may bring some people have it some people dont. But not...im having a serious vaginal discharge and i hope it has nothing to do with the patch!... ALSO BE AWARE THAT THE PATCH IS NOT A 100% AGAINST PREGNANCY ..........you could be the 1% who does!

Lori Double Vision May 12th, 2008 Rating: Not Rated
I have been on the patch for about two years now and am experiencing soem very scary side effects. Yesterday morning I woke up and had severe double vision, I could not focus my eyes which in turn made me nauseous. I went to the emergency room and they gave me a ct scan and I am booked for a MRI to check for any other problems. They told me it might be blood clots. After reading the other comments on this site, I now realize that the cramps in my legs could also be related. I have also experienced the mood swings and yeast infections, which I never had before starting the patch.
Has anyone else expereinced this vision problem? I am also considering joing the class action suit that was filed in Canada, does anyone else have any experience with this?
Thanks

I have been using the patch for about 3 years or so now. At first everything was great and I didn't have any problems. I did seem to get more migranes than usual, but I didn't think that it was b/c of the patch. When I would miss a day to put my new patch on I would wait until after my next cycle, but I wouldn't get my next cycle until 3 or 4 months later, or until I would just stick the patch on again. It was weird. I have been off the patch now for 3 months and have had one period, but none since then. But I have felt a lot better since I have been off the patch. My sex drive is better, and I have a lot more energy. I would NOT recomend this product to anyone.

I was Orhto Evra for about a year, I thought it was great until I started experiencing odd side effects that included extreme mood swings, weight gain, dramatic breast size increase (which I didnt really need) I started researching the information and was horrified by what I learned. There are numerous lawsuits/class actions lodged against the makers of Ortho Evra that include wrongful deaths/negligence. I asked my doctor for it and he wrote the prescription,no questions asked and no mention of the risk factors This patch is poisen, there are rumours of falsified research and suscpicions of a connection between types of cancers, infertility and suicide, not to mention the documented cases of deaths from clots and other related "issues". The research on this patch is being done as we speak based on our complaints and experiences, we are the guinea pigs! the FDA has put out too many warnings on this birth control method to make it a safe choice for women. Be safe ladies!

K Bad circulation May 12th, 2008 Rating: Not Rated
I have been on the patch for about a year now. I started on the pill and disliked it because I kept forgetting to take it. I started the patch and was really impressed. I didn't have any side affects. I've had bad migranes since I was about 12-13, I beleive, so I didn't think about if the patch would contribute to it. My limbs have always gone a lil numb every now and then. Recently I've just been getting constant headaches and migranes. I realize now that I do often feel sick. My arms, hands, and feet constantly go numb for no apparent reason sometimes. I asked my doctor about this a few months ago and she said that some people just have poor circulation. I also feel chest pain (kind of like my heart is having a hard time beating). Every one of these have been getting worse and now that I'm hearing more about the side affects, and what has happened to girls concerning blood clots. I am concerned about my health. I don't want to get off the patch because I don't want to get pregs, and I don't really like the other methods. I feel my only other option is abstinence! :( I have been with my boyfriend and only him intimently, and I know he would not like this idea. Although I know he would still love me. I really want to get off of it! It is just too unnatural. Any other bith control ideas?

Casey I'm off the patch May 12th, 2008 Rating: Not Rated
I orginally began using the patch for the ease of it. I was just terrible at taking the pill. My only major concern was the terrible itch that I would experience where the patch was adhered to my skin. I've never had an itch like that it my life---it kept me up nights and caused me to break skin! I finally went off of it for health reasons (the patch is notorious for blood clots and other nasty side effects) and because my husband and I are planning on starting a family this summer. The biggest benefit of getting off the pill was a 6 lb weight loss. I was by no means overweight before going off the pill, but running 15 miles a week didn't budge the number on the scale. After only 2 weeks off the patch, I had dropped 6 lbs and have consistently kept it off for a month and a half without changing any of my habits.

Liberty blurred vision May 12th, 2008 Rating: Not Rated
I was a patch user for about 2 years. About a year ago I started having blurred vision and sensitivity to light. I asked my optometrist if it could be related to the patch, since my eyes appeared healthy, and she really wasn't sure. After the problem continued she referred me to an opthamologist. After inserting dye and viewing the vessels in the back of my eye, he said the vessel appeared 30% smaller than normal. I am a very healthy 31 year old and I never had high blood pressure, so this was abnormal. The doctor concluded that the hormones in the patch had caused my vision problems. He had just seen a 23 year woman who had had a stroke in her cornea, who was on the patch. I have been off the patch for 8 weeks now.I am still waiting for my vision to be completely normal.Has anyone else out there exprienced this? Hopefully not. My husband opted to have a vasectomy and I will no longer put any sort of hormones in my body.

W.A.T.A. Pregnant after Patch May 12th, 2008 Rating: Not Rated
The first time I went off the patch, it took me about 2.5 months to become pregnant. I do have one child now, and just went of the patch again, after being on it for a year. I have only been off for a couple weeks now. I have had no side affects from the patch being on, or taking it off, except for lighter periods, no cramping, and some itchiness if I put my patch on more "boney" areas. I have found if I put it on my legs where there is a little more "meat", it is great. I have loved the patch, and have had no problems getting pregant after going off... just the amount of time it takes to "get out of my system".

Everyone is different, see what works for you!

I am 24 years old and about to marry the a wonderfull man. I am an IT manager so stress is normal to me. I have been using the patch for three months now. I have just ripped it off and I will never put it back. It has caused me to be irrational, anxious, depressed and I cried all the time. My mother noticed and so did my fiance. They both on seperate occasions told me that I have changed. I was constantly stressed and did I mention constantly hungry???? NOT GOOD 6 monts before your wedding. I did some research on the web and read this entire forum. For those ladies out there this is working for -great stuff. For those suffering side effects get the hell off it. Its not worth it I promise you. I went from crying the whole time and being a nervous wreck to happy I can hanle anything old me. There is no history of depression in my family (dont know about insanity though :-))) but honestly it just didnt work for me I feald awfull. Had headaches and bad depression. I am going back to some other kind of contraception till I am ready to have kids. After reading the articles on Evra I was shocked,,,, be carefull ladies, I came of light.... others have died.

Ok, I was on the patch for two months and I couldnt stand it anymore, so I stops two weeks into my second box. I dont even know if that was safe to stop right in the middle. Anyways, I got my period like one day after i stopped which was weird cause that was only two weeks apart. I had loss of appetite, depression, nausea around food, it was pretty bad. After the patch was off, I started having small headaches, which i didnt before, and intense ance on my face. Got the ance under control but now I have skin rashes all over my arms and legs. Its not a pleasant experience, having MORE problems than what I started out with. Ask my doctor, and he said is normal and it could take up to SIX MONTHS to get back to normal. WHy soo long. I HATE THE PATCH!

I've been on the patch for several years & wish that I had never gone on it--several symptoms that I have been able to trace to the patch have developed: tingling in my arms, shortness of breath, a racing heartbeat, palpitations, chest & abdominal pains, clots in my legs & rashes from the patch. I'm now under a doctor's daily care & basically non-functional (depressed, not motivated, and I feel sick all over--I used to be exceptionally healthy & fit). I hope I can get through this nightmare intact. I warn all women to stay far away from this patch until it has been more fully tested. It's scary!

Now I am off because my husband and I want to try for a baby by August of this year.... but my emotions have been worse in the last month being off the patch than they were when I was on it! Does this fade in time? I have only been off of it for 3 weeks... I don't know when I might have a period again... that isnt my worry for now. I have been on it for about 7 months and have had no side effects other than breast enlargment(which I am not complaining about,(I went from a C cup to a D or DD)before I went on the patch I had bad cramps and irregular periods and now that is all gone. At first I had trouble with the patch staying on especially when I'd take a hot bath, but I've learned a few tricks and I take shorter baths and I no longer have any problems. I'm not fond of the fact that it looks kinda like an old band-aid after 3 or 4 days but I'm willing to put up with that.
