About Protonix
Protonix is used for:
- the short-term (up to 8 weeks) healing of a gradual breakdown (erosion) or sore (ulceration) in the esophagus which may be caused by the backward flow of gastric acid from the stomach into the esophagus (gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD). For people who have not healed after 8 weeks of treatment, an additional 8 week course of Protonix may be considered.
- the maintenance of healing or erosive or ulcerative esophagitis GERD.
- the long-term treatment of medical conditions that result in the body secreting too much acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Side Effects of Protonix
Protonix is generally well tolerated. The most common side effect is headache. Your health care provider can discuss with you a complete list of possible side effects.

Started having heart attacks/ severe weakness while taking Protonix
Hello, I am 35 years old and was 32 when I had this experience.... I just wanted to let everyone know that I had been on Prilosec and Nexium for about 10 years and they worked really well for my severe acid reflux. A couple years ago I got a new doctor and he prescribed Protonix to me and at that exact same time, I started getting super weakness in my heart and bad attacks. I was so weak in my heart I thought I was going to die all day long for all three weeks that I was taking it. These attacks were so extreme that I could not go to work for those three weeks. All I could do was lay in bed feeling weak and on the very edge of death! During the three weeks I was taking this drug, I had gone to the hospital several times with feelings of severe weakness in my heart and terrible attacks of weakness, cold feverish lightheadedness and loss of appetite. Then I went back to the doctor who prescribed it to me and had an attack right there in his office and called the ambulance and when they arrived he was like yelling at them and they told me on the way to ER, that this guy was acting very unprofessionally. This doctor was new to me and I didn't trust him as I had noted very early on that he was always acting very suspicious. I later found out this guy was under investigation for malpractice, and a week or so later, that he had, out of the blue, disappeared back to his home town in Virgina due to so called family problems...yeah right! Anyway, the ER told me every thing was fine, but I knew that it was not, so I decided I was going to stop taking Protonix and thew them into the trash and never looked back. Within about 3 or 4 days I slowly started feeling better, but I think that this drug has done some damage to my heart as I have never felt right ever since. I do still to this day, believe that this drug nearly killed me. I HIGHLY DO NOT TRUST OR RECOMMEND THIS DRUG!!!

Protonix
I am over sixty years of age and have had ulcers numerous times with all the attending symtomatic side effects for over thirty years. Doctors had me on Taqamet and other supposed high potency meds with no beneficial results, only noxious side effects. I had been suffering with excruciating stomach pain with attendant acid reflux, weight loss, migrain headaches, diarhea and loss of memory, ad nauseum for the past five years and finally had to resort to 20mg of Morphine per day just to get a slight bit of rest each night. I was sure I had a massive ulcer recurrence but my Doctor examined me and said I had no ulcers but only major overproduction of gastric acid and put me on Protonix (40mg) per day with evening meal. The first night I slept like a baby and have ever since. I have not had any adverse side effects, have gained over forty pounds of weight (up to normal range), have energy that I had forgotten I could have since I was in my early twenties and feel thirty years younger. This sounds amazing -- well it is! Especially since no other medication ever gave me any measureable relief.

protinix
I had problems with my stomach for a year now.I have been on Zantac and Prolisec, had an ipper G.I.I was diagnosed with G.E.R.D.and H.Pylori.I have taken two rounds of antibiotics, nothing had helped. So I went back to the Doc..She said that I now have irritable bowel syndrone. She prescribed Protinix,Buspar, and Lexapro. She thinks that I also have a nervous stomach.I also feel lightheaded so I am on Meclazine,of which I don't take much.It is an as needed drug.I haven't taken the Buspar, but I have taken the Lexapro. So here's my problem that I hope some one can help me with!I now have taken Lexapro and Protinix(works great)and are having trouble sleeping, waking up with fast heart beat.sweating, feeling like I am going to die, nervousness, can't eat very much at one time.I can't stop taking the protinix because my stomach feels like it is pushing everything upwards into my chest. So should I stop taken these drugs or continue for a couple more weeks.I really need help here,I am scared.P.S I also forgot to mention that Doc.also prescribed Levsin,But with these problems I am afraid to take it.

Protonix
I've been on protonix since March 7th after an endoscopy showed an ulcer. i was told to take 1 pill an hour before a meal. I stoppped drinking coffee, no salty or spicy food any more, i don't drink so that's not a problem. This didn't help one bit, i was still nauseous and having heartburn all day.
My doctor then put me on Metoclopramide along with the protonix but the side effect were too much to handle ( sleepiness, confusion) so now i'm taking two protonix twice a day. I'll tell you no matter how many Protonix i take i'm still feeling sick but now i'm feeling bloated and having the urge to go to the bathroom.
either i need to find another doctor or he needs to put me on something that is going to help me.

Protonix
I have recently been taking Protonix for the past 4 weeks and it seems nothing has improved. I was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer relative problem at the hospital because there was black stuff in my sputum and i have been feeling like i am on my period and have been burping alot and feeling nauseated. I also started taking spectracef a few days ago for another condition and that seemed like it made my stomach problems even worse! i am also having sharp back pain and abdominal pain on the left side. I am only 20 and it is making me very depressed and worried. I take xanax for anxiety and also wander if that might be affecting the ulcer. Someone if they have any input on the situation please email me and help me.

Protonix not working for me
A few years ago I was diagnosed with three duodenal ulcers. I was put on Nexium which worked for the first week, but then all the symptoms returned. I was switched to Prevacid and did wonderfully for the past two years. Now the insurance has forced me to Protonix, and all the symptoms are back. (Taking 40mg once a day so I don't know if upping the dosage will help, but it didn't with the Nexium.) Clearly we're all different. Shame the insurance companies have to genericize us, too.

Protonix
After taking Protonix, an individual submitted to an announced drug test. The urine drug test indicated a false positive for THC (marijuana). This problem is well documented. However, the gas chromatograph/mass spectometry also indicated a small amount of THC present. Is there any information regarding false positives for THC via GC/MS when Protonix is present?

protonix and high blood sugar
I have been taking Protonix (40mg)since April of this year when I went into the hospital with a heart attack, bleeding ulcers and acute renal failure. The Protonix has been taking care of my ulcers just fine but my blood sugar has sky rocketed. I have been diabetic for 31 years and my sugar has been in control. It now runs 100-150 points above normal. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Heart problems
I was put on Protonix for a throat injury from ground fighting, I had my esophagus injured and a little acid reflux was keeping it from healing. I took Protonix for 3 weeks then I decided the side effects (my elbows were sore in the morning, I developed a bone sore in my jaw, and a mild twitch in my chest) the sore elbow and jaw got better but the twitch in my chest turned out to be my heart!
After 3 days of random 10-20 second heart flutters and mild tightness about half the day I went to the doctor. EKG was okay but when he listed to my heart he said I have an irregular extra beat and asked if I could feel it, I told him no it feels fine at the moment, but the flutter and tightness scares the hell out of me. I am 43 don't drink or smoke and am just below a professional athlete in health. I am being put on a 24 hour heart monitor tomorrow and have no clue what they can do to help me.
I will not recommend this medicine to anyone unless it's your only chance at life, as I believe it is killing me even after stopping taking it. Their website is useless for people with side effects. I called my brother two days ago and provided him will all my financial information - thats how bad this is for me.

Protonix
This stuff is great!!!!! I was in such pain and my doctor put me on Previcid with no luck. I went back and was treated by the doctor on call and he told me what the problem was and put me on Protonix. It only took 2 days to stop the pain and it has not come back. I have been on it 4 weeks.
Thinking about changing docotrs also.

Acid Reflux and H. Pylori
I am presently on Nexium as I have Acid Reflux and H. Pylori infection.
Am thinking about switching to Protonix, but am wondering if my Acid Reflux can ever be cured as long as I continue to have the H. Pylori infection.
I tried various treatments for the infection, but my body couldn't tolerate the heavy-duty drugs, so I stopped.
Am still faced with bitter sour acid reflux coming up into my throat.
Please help !!!! Nadia@catskill.net

MY 14 YR OLD WAS GIVEN THIS TODAY.........ANY ADVICE?
My son has been having stomach pain and vomiting for over 2 weeks now. They ran tests and xrays to check for a blockage or appendicitis and the doctor came to the conclusion it must be gastritis. After reading some of the comments about the Protonix and the effect on emotions (anxiety, depression, crying), I'm not so sure I want my 14 yr old son taking this. Does anyone here have a child that has been on this drug and how did they do on it? I really hesitate to put him on something that may cause unpleasant side effects like depression or dizziness.

Wonderful Drug!
I am 22 years old and have been taking Protonix (1 40mg pill every day) for about 16 months and I feel great! When I was 19 I started experiencing terrible heartburn, acid-burping, and burning in my throat. I took Tums, Maalox Plus, Tagamet, Phazymes Ultra; you name it, I took it, and NOTHING helped. After about a year, I finally decided it was time to see my doctor. He told me it was probably an infection in the lining of my stomach (I guess this is common in younger people) and he prescribed some antibiotics. This helped for about a month and then it started all over again. He then diagnosed me with acid reflux disease I was prescribed Axid, then Prilosec, and finally Prevacid (which I was allergic to)and still no results. I was tested for ulcers with negative results. It was then I moved to a new city as well as a new doctor and, bless the man, he prescribed Protonix. I felt relief immediately and have ever since. I have had NO strange side effects, headaches, ect. BUT, if I forget to take a pill, I know it as soon as I eat something that is spicy or irritating. My only concern is that there hasn't been any true LONG-term study. It seems they tested it up to 1 or 2 years, but I cannot find any studies extending beyond that amount of time. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has taken the drug longer than 2 years or has seen any studies performed longer than 2 years. Please e-mail me if you have questions about Protonix or you have seen any long-term studies that you feel might help me. I believe that everyone should give this drug a shot, as it might be the drug that finally helps where no other did!

Protonix and Sleepiness
Hi there, I've been taking Protonix for about 5 days and am experiencing extreme sleepiness. I was taking it before bed and waking up with a hangover feeling and I stayed tired all day. I called my doctor and he said he had never heard of anyone having a side effect like mine and to try to take it in the day time. Well, I did just that and am still tired all day. I found this site and saw that I'm not the only one who is experiencing tiredness. What is in the medicine that would cause tiredness? I'm curious to know. Doctors hand out medicine like candy without knowing what it does to people. Ever seen the movie Brain Candy? Anyway, good luck to everyone!

Bleeding ulcer
Was hospitalized in April for 14 days. Went into ER needing 6 units of blood immediately. Only symptoms were extremely weak upon awakening in the morning, lightheaded, dizzy, very low blood pressure and pulse rate. I had to received 14 units before leaving 14 days later. After 11 days gastroentologist was finally able to find through esopohogeal scoping, the large ulcer very high in my stomach. Doctor was able to cauterize to stop bleeding. Stomach which had moved above and behind my heart made locating location of bleeding very difficult.
I find I have no pain, never have had and no appetite at all. Nothing has flavor or appeals to me. Has anyone else found this as a side effect? Appreciate your comments.
