What is Tequin used for?

Tequin is an antibiotic used to treat adults with lung, sinus, or urinary tract infections and also to treat certain sexually transmitted diseases caused by germs called bacteria. Sometimes viruses, rather than bacteria, may infect the lungs and sinuses (for example, the common cold). Tequin, like all other antibiotics, does not kill viruses.

The sexually transmitted disease called gonorrhea is treated by Tequin. Other sexually transmitted diseases including syphilis and non-gonococcal diseases are not treated by Tequin.

Who should not take Tequin?

You should not take Tequin if you:

  • have ever had a severe allergic reaction to any medicine in the group of antibiotics known as "quinolones" such as Cipro (ciprofloxacin) or Levaquin (levofloxacin).
  • have a rare condition known as congenital prolongation of the QTc interval. If any of your family members have this condition, you should inform your health care provider.
  • have a condition known as hypokalemia (low blood potassium). Hypokalemia may be caused by medicines called diuretics such as furosemide and hydrochlorthiazide. If you are taking a diuretic you should speak with your health care provider.
  • are taking certain medicines to treat an irregular heartbeat.

General Precautions with Tequin:

  • Individuals who take Tequin should not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know that Tequin does not cause you to get dizzy.
  • Individuals who take Tequin should avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Although not reported with Tequin, certain other quinolones increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight, and severe sunburn may result. Call your doctor if you experience severe burning, redness, itching, rash, or swelling after exposure to the sun while taking Tequin.

What should I tell my doctor or health care provider?

  • Tell your health care provider if you are trying to become pregnant, are already pregnant, or are breast-feeding. The effects on the unborn child and nursing infant are unknown.
  • Review ALL medications that you are taking with your health care provider, including those that you take without a prescription. Tequin can interact with other medicines, including multivitamins. To avoid possible additive drug effects, Tequin should not be taken together with certain medications (such as quinidine, procainamide, sotolol, and amiodarone) that affect heart the electrocardiogram test. In theory, this could result in a dangerous heart rhythm disturbance.
  • Some medicines also produce an effect on the electrocardiogram test, including cisapride, erythromycin, some antidepressants and some antipsychotic drugs. These may increase the risk of heart beat problems when taken with Tequin. For this reason it is important to let your health care provider know all of the medicines that you are using.

What are some possible side effects of Tequin? (This is NOT a complete list of side effects reported with Tequin. Your health care provider can discuss with you a more complete list of side effects.)

The side effects of Tequin are generally mild, but serious side effects have been reported in people taking this class of drugs. These reactions may occur after taking just one dose. If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking Tequin and call your doctor:

  • an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives)
  • central nervous system (CNS) side effects including: seizures, dizziness, confusion, tremors, hallucinations, depression, or suicidal thoughts
  • pain, inflammation, or rupture of a tendon

Tequin is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects that can occur when taking Tequin are usually mild, and include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache

I have been on it for almost two weeks and about three days ago I noticed
vaginal dryness. Now I have what feels like little bumps on my vagina. I will go to the hospital and see what is going up.

Pneumonia treatment

After being sick with what I thought was just a cold or the flu for about a week, went to the doctor. He took x-rays and initially prescribed arythromyacin (not sure about spelling). After 2 days on that with no improvement, he prescribed tequin after seeing some pneumonia in the lungs. Within 24 hours went from feeling almost dead to significantly improved. Don't know if the initial drugs worked toward the speedy turnaround or if it was the tequin by itself. Now on 3rd day of 10 day prescription and feeling much better, although quite weak and tire easily. Based on other info on pneumonia I've read about pneumonia recovery, this appears to be a typical recovery symptom. Fortunately no other symptoms such as those describe in other comments as of the 3rd day.

I was prescribed Tequin 400 mg for 10 days for upper resp infection and sinus infection. I am a Type II diabetic. I am taking Glucovance 500 mg, 2 pills in morning and afternoon with Actos, 1 pill at bedtime. I have been a Type II for over 5 years. My blood sugar usually runs between 119 and 140 depending on the proper amount of excerise and proper food intake. I have just completed the 10 day cycle of Tequin. Since I have been taking it I have to closely watch my sugar and it usually runs between 180 and 210 with the same type of food and excerise. Typically expect your blood sugar to increase. I have not had any side effects other than the increase in blood sugars.

Has anyone ever had or heard of anyone having a problem with an extremely painful tongue after taking tequin? I have been on Tequin already for a week..it was prescribed after amoxicillin since amoxicillin couldn't help me...I had severe bronchial asmthma with sinus infection & sore throat..On day 5 of taking tequin, my tongue started getting sore ..today..my tongue feels as though it were sliced down the middle with a knife...it has whitish areas on the side of the tongue which are very painful also...It's painful to drink any liquids or to eat. Even black cherries when consumed create a severe burning sensation on the tongue...I called my Doctor & pharmacist both of whom stated that they never heard of the tequin causing such a thing...Any input would be appreciated !
Thank You!

was given to me for a bacterial infection of my sstomach, and gastro, infection. In the past when I have been given anti-bacterial medicatin it has put my Rheumitoid Arthritis into tremendous flares, this gave a VERY SLIGHT reactiooooon to my "RA"

My mom was prescribed tequin she took the 1st dose and it made
her feel sick and weak the next day she took another dose and my dad
said she was holding on to things and felt dizzy , dropped her cup was
just not feeling right so she went to lie down on the couch for awhile
when she awoke she could not speak it turned out she had a stroke.
The doctors and everyone I talked to said there was no way it could
have been from this medicine but I still say it was my mom was in fair
health and it happend right when she started taking this medicine. so
my advice to anyone taking it becareful. My mom is lucky to still be
here with us but she lost her speech and can not use her left arm.
I thank god that my dad missed work that day because if not she might
not of been so lucky. I have no proof that this medicine did this but
in my heart and mind I know what I seen and how it happend.

Horrible Side Affects

I took 1 pill after my doctor gave it to me. Within 30 minutes, I was suffereing from an extremely rapid heart beat, swelling of the lips and redness of the facial skin. I thought I was having a heart attack. I called my doctor, but he was gone and I got in touch with the on-call physician. He instructed me to take Benadryl to counteract what Tequin had done to me. I'll never take this drug again. Just 2 days later, I had severe leg and joint pain on my right side and had much difficulty sleeping. It was just a horrible experience. It made me feel worse than I already was. Beware when using this drug. Ask your doctor for an alternative, and ask him if it's absolutely necessary you need it. Doctors in the US tend to over-prescribe drugs, namely antibiotics these days from pressure from patients. Antibiotics CAN'T kill viruses, and viruses are what affects most people during the Winter months. Rest, fluids and more rest are the key to recovery.

Thanks All

I just want to say thank you to all the poeple who put in comments here. I started on Tequin 2 days ago for sinus/chest infection...Augmentin wasn't cutting it. Dizzy, disoriented, just kindof out of it. Just two days before I had my third lumbar epidural in as many weeks, so I didn't know if something had happened in my spine or what. Also taking Vicodin for the spine deal and to throw a bit more into the mess, I have Lupus. Scared the crap out of me since I didn't know what was causing what. After reading all your comments, I'm confident that it's just the Tequin causing this and not the epidurals (very scary when they start injecting stuff into your spine). I'll still call around to the docs today and report symptoms (just cuz' I like to whine at them LOL), but again thank you to all of you who took the time to put in comments and make me feel better.

By the way, I DO feel a bit better today, cough's not as hard and my face doesn't feel like it's coming off anymore.

I have a UTI and staretd taking Tequin yesterday, seems to be working although I do have a little dry mouth and I am going to the bathroom more, but at least there is no pain. Has anyone experianced frequent going to the bathroom while taking this?

near death

This October will be 3 years ago that my husband was given tequin for a bad cold. His hands started swelling and tingling on the third day of taking the tequin. On the fourth day he was having fits with his hands and legs, he went on to work anyway, he's not one to miss work.On the fifth day at 7:00am he called me and told me to call our doctor and tell him to meet him at his office. From that he was admitted in the hopital, both arms swollen and they looked bruised and also his left leg was sowllen and looked bruised. They had to give him six pints of plasad(don't know if it is spelled right) blood. The doctor had an oncology Dr. to come in and check him, he had a liver doctor to check him and a doctor that practices with blood disorders. He stayed in the hospital 8 days, was released and had the University Hospital to call and tell him he could dying. They treated him with vitiam K for 3 days and released him for home but said he would have to come every week for a year or more. They tried to blame it on poison but we know it was the tequin.

I had a serious sinus infection, which caused me to get an ear infection and sore throat, also causing difficulty with breathing (I also have asthma). I finally broke down and went to see my doctor who precribed Tequin, after only 1 dose I began to feel so much better. It has caused me some nausea but I can breath easily, which is saving me money on my inhalers. I'm really glad that my doctor prescribed this to me, at this point there are so many antibiotics that no longer help me.
I know that next time I get a sinus infection that I'll be calling my doctor asking for Tequin. I can deal with a little nausea, but not being able to breathe... just not a good thing. Thank you Bristol-Myers for creating this antibiotic.
Feeling soooo... much better.

After finishing a round of amoxocillin and then a z-pac for a sinus infection I was given Tequin,on my 7th day now. Was in the ER 5 days ago with loss of vision, dilated pupil in right eye, shaking hands. Blood work showed slightly elevated blood sugar level, ct showed normal, all other tests normal. ER doctor (bed side manner stinks!) said I just need new glasses. Next day went to family doctor, more tests, blood sugar level down, diabetes negative, another ct, ordered an MRI. Next evening blood sugar level low, hands trembling, headache, pressure behind the eyes. MRI was normal....getting very frustrated. Now doctor wants me to see neurologist. I feel horrible, can't tell if sinus problem is gone because of headache and pressure behind the eyes, dizzy, hands tremble, right eye dilated again, migraine. Now I think it is simply the Tequin! Thank you all for your messages...more than the doctor has told me! I am going to stop taking the Tequin and see what happens.

I am so happy to have found your site. I was prescribed Tequin by an ER doctor for pneumonia 4 days ago, it has worked wonderfully better on the pneumonia symptoms BUT the side effects were not worth it.
I have had, for four days the worst cramps, bloating, gas I have ever expereinced in my entire life!
All day my stomach was bloated to the point of not only LOOKING pregnant but it felt like a baby kicking it was so bad!
I was prescribed Augmentin to take Tequin's place, I hope it works as well, but there was noway I could put up with this awful pain for another 6 days!
Thank you for this wonderful forum!

Wow!!! I'm surprised at the comments here. I had a sinus infection for almost a year. I took numerous amounts of antibiotics, which did NOT clear up all the bacteria. So the infection kept coming back. I was prescribed Tequin for 10 days, and by day 2, I felt like a new man. No nausea, no dry mouth, nothing. I mean it absolutely worked for me. This was two years ago, and I currently have another sinus infection (long story), but I CAN'T find a doctor to prescribe me any more Tequin. They all say that they try another antibiotic, when I KNOW for a fact that Tequin works for me. GRRRRR!!!

Tequin Reaction

I was in such excuriating pain that I thought that I was going to die and the worst part about it was that I wanted to. I had severe sharp pains in my vaginal area, it felt like someone was jugging my insides with a pole. I could hardly sit down. I begin to vomit and tremble, I was so sick. I went to the doctor and she diagnosed me with a UTI. I took a pill while I was in her office. This was around 3:30 p.m. I went home got in the bed and about 5:30 p.m. I begin to feel a considerable amount of relief. I went to sleep again. When I woke up this morning I immediately took another pill. I will say that it has me feeling a little tired and nausea.
But, compared to the way that I felt yesterday I will take this feeling any day. I don't think anyone should have to hurt the way I did on yesterday. Try driving on the beltway with one hand holding your vaginal area and the other hand on the steering wheel with pains shooting throughout your body. I thank God for this pill. I feel a little pressure but it is bearable. I recommend it highly.

Tequin Safe?

I have heard this pill causes sever hypoglycemia, followed by severe hyper glycemia. It also causes hepatitis, kidney failure and gastrointestinal problems and sepsis. How can the FDA approve an antibiotic like this?

Sinus infection

No bad effects at all. Cleared up my infection....maybe a little bit of a headache in the mornings....excedrine helps a lot. Tequin worked well for me.

My tongue has a red burning sensation. It also has a yellow tinge on both sides of the tongue and cannot be removed by brushing. Tequin is the only other thing I have taken since beginning to take it. I have had a sinus infection for several weeks and it seems that Tequin is not going to clear it up. It has been a week since I started taking it. Any suggestions?

I recently was taking Tequin for a boil on the breast. My first day everything seemed to be fine. The second day I had been up for 18 hours with out sleep and dry mouth. Third day I called my doctor however, she was'nt in the office and was suppose to call me back. I told the nurse to tell the doctor that I will no longer be taking the medicine. While at work seemed like ALL the side effects was effecting me along with lost of vision I fainted and was rush to the hospital where everything checked out okay. IT WAS THE TEQUIN.

P.S. Someone needs to be made aware of this DEADLY pill TEQUIN.
