Trileptal seizures/ADHD

My grandaughter has always been a handful. Always on the go, getting into things, very aggressive. She had her first seizure at 17 months of age. A grand mal, which left her with some brain damage, and no use of her right arm and leg. She completely recovered from all of these problems within a few weeks. After a few months Medicaid decided they wouldn't pay for her medicine anymore. My daughter and son-in-law could not afford the $1000.00 a month, and so the Dr. decided to take her off the medicine to see if it may have been a one time thing. She is 4 now, and she's had no problems, or so we thought. She has always had a problem with vomiting when she gets upset, overheated, or plays to hard. Recently she started making movements as if she were getting sick, but trying to swallow it back down. It wasn't until she started foaming at the mouth and making repetitive movements with hands, that we realized she was seizing. So we took her to the hospital, then the neurologist. She has started trileptal, 2.5 ml twice a day for three days. We are to raise her dose every 3 days until she is at her full dose. Today is day three of the 2.5 ml. The seizures are gone. The problem is, she is uncontrollable. She has boundless energy. She is very mean. She can't stay on task at all. She says she wants a sandwich, she takes one bite, then she wants something else. I can't live with this child much longer. Has anyone else had an experience like this, with Trileptal? Do you know if it will improve with time?

Trileptal Quality & cost

I have been taking Trileptal ( name brand ) for several years for mild seizures and it has been very successful in treating this problem. now I am on Medicare ( I live near Boston ) and the cost of this drug is very high. I am thinking of ordering some from Canada, where the cost is much less. I take 600mg tabs which Canadian vendors say are made in Turkey. I can get name brand Trileptal much less but I wonder at the quality control. Can any one comment on this issue. Has anyone had any problems with Trileptal made outside Canada or USA? Thanks

What is going on?

Its been almost a year and a half since i've taken trileptal. Sure i have no problems but thats only because I'm sleep or too sleeply to care. I'm 18 now and i've been taking Trileptal since Valentines Day 2003, I didnt know up until today that this pill was used for seizures. Now that i think about it since ive taken trileptal my mood swings increase more. When I forget my pill i get more violent and more and more depressed, is it just me or does this happen to anyone else???

6yr on Trileptal for mood disorder

My daughter is 6 years old and diagnosed with Attention-Deficity Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). She has been taking Strattera for her ADHD for several months now, and all went well to begin with. Lately she has been going through what appears to be mood swings, so the doctor prescribed her Trileptal about a week ago. She now has boundless energy, is very moody, and only sleeps for a few hours at night. Her teacher has commented that she is more disruptive in class, can't sit still, and does not follow directions... teacher says she is a totally different child since starting the Trileptal. I've done a lot of online research, and this is the first place I have heard anybody mention Trileptal being used for mood disorders (bi-polar). Everywhere else it says that it is used strictly for seizure disorders, which my daughter does NOT have. I am having serious doubts about continuing this medication with her, and would like to hear comments from others.

6 weeks ago my Neurologist changed my Medication from Dillantin to Trileptal. I had a brain tumor removed in 1996 and I just found out that I have another growing in the same place. After reading the articles on trileptal I thought it would be a good chance to share what I am feeling now that I have reached my max dosage. I have problems with Tremors,Dizziness, nausea, headache, forgetfulness. I am going to give the Medication a chance to work because side effects are not as bad as the Seizures. I enjoyed reading all of the information in these articles, it has been a good source other that the ones that are promoting the Drug...

bipolar and Tileptal

I have been bipolar for over 20 years and have been on Lithium consistently and other meds off and on. The last few years - more on than off. I am now taking Effexor, Lithium and was recently started on Trileptal for a mood stabilizer. I have tremors and feel jittery and anxious alot of the time. Any suggestions? Will these side effects subside over time if I persist?

I've been on trileptal for about 5 months for treatment of an uncommon eye problem known as "superior oblique myokymia" or SOM for short.
Partial seizures where cranial nerve 4 coming in contact with the superior oblique eye muscle causes the eyeball to rotate in spasm .. flicker like... one eye only ... usually the right. Otherwise, I'm well. I don't take it in conjuction with other strong drugs.
Having first been on Neurontin (2400 mg./day) for my problem and experiencing all the zombie like side effects .. to no avail, my neurologist swithced me to Trileptal. I take 200 mg./day. One 100 in the morning and another at bedtime. It's made a world of difference.
My vision was chronically disturbed prior to any treatment and still while on the Neurontin. Neurontin didn't help at all. I could hardly drive a car. My eye is quiet now (95% of the time). While the seizures are controlled trileptal hasn't been a cure. It's a way to maintain. I don't really want to go to a higher dosage. Almost no real side effects. If anything over time I think that it may be affecting my mood somewhat.
Seems that I'm a little down at times where I'm normally in good spirits.
It would be nice to have some data on the cumulative effect of the drug on ones body over time. If anyone has any I'd appreciate an updater

Trileptal for seizures

I have been on Trileptal for about 2 years now but I have just recently started to get a skin reaction that had not been there in the beginning when I started taking trileptal. My cheeks and chin have become very dry this winter to the point of peeling if I use very warm to hot water while taking a shower or washing my face. I also I have had to use extra for for my skin on my body and arms and legs or they will become very dry also. It also seems as though my hair in the very front along my hair line along forhead. Would this have anything to do with the trileptal I am currently taking at this time.

In the beginning when I started taking trileptal I lost about 20lbs. Now, it seems I'm gaining weight. I can't stop eating sweets. I'm not sure if it's the medicine or just anxiety. Has anyone else experience this?

My 6 yr old son was just dx with simple partial seizures this week and was put on trileptal 2.5 ml 2x day. His are very mild and last only a few seconds. He is fully conscious when he has an episode. The only area affected is his ability to speak words. I am a bit concerend b/c instead of making the seizures stop, the meds increased the amount he had but made the duration shorter. Has this happened to anyone else? Also are there any children that have had success with trileptal for simple partial?

4 yr old with seizures

My granddaughter, 4 yrs old had her 1st seizure a month ago. Last Friday, she had 2 more. Both times we had to call 911. A week ago her neurologist prescribed Trileptal. She has been agressive with energy that does not stop. She bit 4 kids at preschool yesterday. She was never a biter before this. The doctor said this isn't a side effect, however the drug has only been on the market 3 yrs and it appears the majority of children (3-16) tested were over 11 yrs old. Has anyone else had similar experiences with their young child? I'm not convinced this is the drug for her. Her behavior is too erratic and abrupt...not to be related to the medication.

Clinical Depression

I have been taking Trileptal since 8/12/03 for the treatment of Severe clinical depression. This treatment is following a round of ECT treatments. I am currently taking 300 mg twice daily (morning and night). I feel tired yet sometimes I am unable to fall asleep at night? Also, recently I am experiencing numbness in both my arms and sometimes tingling in my fingers? One of my doctors said perhaps this is related to the way I sleep at night? Any comments?

chronic pain

I have what is called RSD or CRPS, a chronic pain disorder.I have been on Methadone and Elavil, along with a muscle relaxer to treat the muscle spams in my arn and hand. These only occur when the pain is basically a 10++++ on the pain scale. It has now become worse and spread to other areas of my body, mostly on my left side. The doctor raised the dosage of my methadone and added trileptal to my daily medication. I would like to hear from anyone who is taking the med's similar to mine and for the same type of symptoms "chronic pain" or reflex sympathetic dystrophy.

Trileptal-Seizure Disorder

My daughter had been on Tegretol since she was 12 for a seizure disorder at 20 years old her WBC was low, and was switched to Trileptal. Around 13 days into the new medicine she started running a fever and vomiting. That week we visitied the family doctor, emergency room, mid week she was wobblie on her feet and had double vision and was taken off of the Trileptal as an allergic reaction. We visited the neurologist the next day, she was so weak I had to wheel chair her into the office. They sent her home saying it was a virus to take Ativan for a couple weeks until she was better before starting her on another seizure medication. That night with her still vomiting and fever, she started having seizures, by the next morning we called the squad and went to another local emergency room. The doctor did a spinal tap, cat scan, chest x-ray, and labs and found out she was in kidney failure. She was transported to Children's Hospital ICU. After a week in the hospital, we found out that the FDA has issued a drug warning on Trileptal. (issued 4/18/2005) My daughter was in the hospital for three weeks. With Acute Renal Failure, Hepatitis, Pacreatitis, and respiratory distress with pulmonary edema. (all caused by Trileptal)!!! It even completly wiped out her WBC and neurtraphils. She got ill on April 10th, her kidneys, liver, labs are all better now, but we are still not able to get her seizures under control. She was 8 years seizure free on Tegretol. She is currently taking Tompamax, Keppra, and Ativan, was just finally weaned off of Neurontin. Please everyone read the FDA drug warning for this awful drug. Before my daughter got sick she had just finished her winter quarter at college and was on spring break. She's not able to go to school, drive, work, or have any kind of life right now the medication she is on she mainly sleeps, and cannot be left alone.

I have been put on Trileptal along with my usual 5 Dilantin a day.My Neurologist put me on it because i've had 3 seizures since Aug 16th 2003.She will be eventually weaning me off the dilantin. Since i've been on it i have been so tired at times and some times i have had a burst of energy . Has anyone else experienced this? Also my arm draws up. Is this supposed to be like this?

My daughter is 16 years old. She had her first seizure when she was 5 months old. She was on Phenobarbitol for 2 years. She had been seizure free until now. She was prescribed Trileptal, 150 mg in A.M. and 150 mg inP.M.. I have to say her mood swings are making her and everyone around her crazy. One minute happy easy going and 5 minutes later she is mad at the world. She tells me she is sorry and can't help it and is very upset over not being able to control her emotions better. She experiences tiredness after taking the medicine, cannot concentrate, thinks she sees something out of the corner of her eye,has a midday rush of energy and then gets exhausted, she feels like she is gaining weight, has numbness in her left upper arm. The bottom line is we want her off this medicine and to find out if there something else available to help keep the seizures away. She has been on the medicine since March 25th, 2005. Her dose was just raised to 150mg in A.M. and 300mg in P.M.. She has not experienced another seizure since March but her side effects of the medicine has increased.

Tileptal (seizures seem worse??)

Hi there: This is a follow up from a prior story listed on here but was unable to contact this person any information from anyone would help

I was reading your story about your son having Simple Partial Epilepsy and my story with my 7 year old daughter sounds very similar to what is happening to her right now! She seems to be having more seizures than before but a bit shorter. Some are even more harsh then before with her jaw moving to one side and slurred speech. Her neurologist has recently raised her meds 3 times. She started out on 3.5mls 2x a day and now is up to 5mls 2x a day......I was wondering since posting that story in September on Internet Drug, if you have had any updated information or changes happen for your son and what you did from that point? The doctor just seems to want to keep raising her dose until she hits 6.5 mls and then she said she would switch her! I get totally freaked out by side affects of other drugs....any advice? Thank you for any help you may be able to give!

Very bad experience

My doctor switched me to trileptal after no help from some others. The Grand mals were months apart, prior. Had only been on this med a couple of months. Started losing my thought trian and had mild lockups but they finially became over powering. Could not do anything right and constant lockups. It landed me in jail when I got on some peoples land, was ask to leave and could not. I would not recomend this drug to anyone. I stopped taking the drug while in jail after 3 months, I got better but even now 1 and 1/2 years later, at times I am still very depressed and can not think clearly. I also have stopped having mal siezures. Watch this drug!!!

I have been put on 300mg a day for epilepsy which i was recently diagnosed to have.Im more scared of the condition than the drugs.Any advice?
