Default Singulair for hives?

My 9 year old son recently broke out in hives for no apparent reason. We took him to a doctor and he was persrcribed Zyrtec and Singulair. What I find odd is that hives are listed as a side effect of Singulair, and mentions nothing of treating them. Is it common to perscribe Singulair for chronic hives, and is it really neccasary when taking Zyrtec? My wife and I feel like the doctor perscribed it for monetary gain and not for his health.
