Default how to wean off of singulair??

my son is 4 and has been taking singulair since he was 2 and a half, after he had a round of croup, bronchitis and then developed a deep cough that came at night... he has not been specifically diagnosed with asthma, but i would like to take him off the singulair as i am not sure he even needs it. maybe the cough that originated the perscription would have cleared on it's own. he has not taken it for two nights and i don't see any reaction, but should i be weaning him off of it? he has had a rash on his arms since he started taking the singulair, and some behavioral changes. how do i get him off of it properly? has any one who has just stopped the medication had any problems? or has anyone been advised how to wean off? i had no idea it had a steroid in it, it says clearly that it is a non steroid medication. i get more upset as i read, he has had alot of the symptoms i see here, and i had no idea they were caused by singulair.
