My father is a Type one diabetic. This is fairly new to him(6MO). He is experiencing depression even suicidal thoughts. Has any one else had this problem. Could it be the medicine or diabetes?

As well as being a type I, I do research in diabetes, and as part of that research have found that both type I and Type II diabetics experience depression at about 11% higher rate than non-chronically ill individuals. In addition, the first several months after diagnosis tend to be the most vulnerable period of time for the development of depressive symptoms. Try to keep him physically active, socially active, and allow him to be in control of his hea;th care as much as possible. Try to help him realize that this is a common reaction, and that, if possible, counseling and therapy can be helpful.<br>Good Luck!
